Summary The New York Power Authority is a dynamic organization known for our innovative projects and collaborative work environment and are passionate about developing and delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions. The Engineering team is seeking a Civil Engineer I to help the Power Authority accomplish its strategy of driving the clean energy transformation through emissions-free generation. In this role, the civil engineer will lead research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA's energy infrastructure. This includes providing design and construction support for a variety of civil engineering projects related to NYPA's power generation assets which can include projects related to roads, dams, buildings, renewables, site engineering and geotechnical engineering. In addition, the role ensures that all Civil/Structural engineering standards associated with facilities and assets are maintained and ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met throughout all engineering activities. Responsibilities Provide lead engineer function in support of a limited range of design modification projects, equipment applications and failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities. Perform site visits to complete field inspections, condition assessments, and equipment evaluations and develop basic technical recommendations Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours. Independently coordinate cross disciplinary activities for the successful development and execution of projects. Select and apply codes, standards, and procedures to work tasks appropriately. Perform inspections and evaluations to ensure engineering requirements and Authority specifications are satisfied. Provide direction and review in the development of the project engineering documents and submittals. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Competency in the design, operation, and maintenance of structural and water systems specific to the electric utility industry. Fundamental knowledge of Civil Engineering systems and materials used for Civil Engineering design. Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Collaborative and team-oriented with ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders. Ability to perform engineering calculations, and complete specifications, scopes of work, reports, and interdisciplinary design packages. Ability to coordinate the technical and commercial aspects of projects. Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications. Working experience with a Civil/Structural, design software such as STAADPro, Risa, MathCad, PLS CADD, HEC-RAS software preferred. Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects. Education, Experience and Certifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Other disciplines may be considered) Minimum of four (5) years of related work experience preferred. New York State Engineer in Training certification preferred. Driver’s license required. Physical Requirements Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State. Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to climb and work at high elevations and in confined spaces, walk a significant distance, sometimes on uneven ground, and perform occasional minor lifting. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully.
