DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS LOCATION: 3505 N. Dries Lane, Peoria, Illinois HOURS: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday AFSCME paygrade 220: $28.07/hr CITY RESIDENCY REQUIRED SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to perform technical engineering tasks to ensure public safety and quality infrastructure. This is accomplished by overseeing development and maintenance projects; construction oversight/review of projects in the right-of-way for utility companies and private contractors; reviewing and issuing right-of-way permits, asset inventory and condition assessments, maintaining permitting, asset management, and other data and systems. Other duties include resolving citizen complaints; assisting with field analysis; performing construction related fieldwork and creating reports. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Associate degree or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school; valid State Driver’s License; and, five or more years of progressively related experience required. Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job considered. IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES: Knowledge of basic principles and practices of construction and/or traffic engineering and of computer aided drafting (CAD), global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) hardware and software; recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques; basic construction and/or traffic data collection tools and equipment and sewer televising equipment and software. Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within closely defined established guidelines; using a computer terminal to accurately and rapidly enter and retrieve data and information; using mathematics, including, algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry; communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; and preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and construction plans and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, work near moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, extreme cold, extreme heat, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Working time may require irregular hours and shift times. When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
