About the Role As the Mechanical Engineer, you will provide mechanical and reliability engineering support across production equipment and supporting facilities between Bunbury Port and Kwinana Port. In this 12-month fixed-term role, you will apply your technical knowledge to daily troubleshooting, strategic improvements, problem investigation and mechanical design work. You will provide advice and assistance to maintenance personnel to improve uptime and equipment reliability, while adhering to regulatory and Alcoa EHS requirements. Tasks are performed in a hands-on setting and may include providing on-call response to restore flow, as well as developing and implementing countermeasures to prevent problem recurrence. This role will work across both port locations on a Monday to Friday roster. Duties Include Develop and optimise equipment reliability strategies, preventative and predictive maintenance programs, and compliance with OEM and engineering standards. Investigate equipment issues and implement engineering solutions to eliminate safety and quality concerns, recurring failures and other operational risks. Develop and maintain equipment bills of materials, critical spares, files, drawings and technical documentation across both Port sites. Prepare scopes of work and provide mechanical engineering support for repairs, major overhauls, and capital and expense projects, proactively identifying delivery risks. Identify and implement continuous improvement, cost reduction and equipment obsolescence initiatives that enhance safety, performance and reliability. What you can bring to the role A tertiary qualification in Engineering with previous experience in maintenance, reliability, heavy industry or plant engineering highly regarded. An understanding of reliability principles, risk management and continuous improvement. The ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, crucial within our dynamic and diverse team environment. Improvements to equipment management strategies with a focus on preventative maintenance and spares systems. Proven experience completing projects, investigating and implementing solutions to address root cause. An ability to prioritise a high workload and persevere through daily challenges. Experience in pumps, calciners, vacuum filters and material handling/conveying will be advantageous. Adequate knowledge in welding procedures and pressure equipment. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
