The Opportunity Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of opportunities, we are seeking an experienced Associate or Senior Associate Engineer - Dams to join our team in Melbourne or Hobart. This role combines technical leadership, project delivery, client engagement and team mentoring across a diverse portfolio of dams, hydropower and water infrastructure projects. You will work closely with our specialists while contributing to the successful delivery of some of the region's most significant infrastructure projects. Key Responsibilities Lead and review dam engineering design and analysis activities. Ensure project deliverables meet client expectations, technical standards and SMEC quality requirements. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex project outcomes. Support project delivery through effective planning, coordination and stakeholder engagement. Contribute to client relationship management and project development opportunities. Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and emerging professionals. Provide technical leadership across dam and hydropower projects. About You You are a technically strong dams professional with a collaborative approach and a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions. You will bring: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. 10+ years' experience in dam engineering. Experience across embankment, CFRD and concrete dam projects. Demonstrated experience delivering complex dams, hydropower, water or major infrastructure projects. Strong understanding of project delivery, coordination, risk management and client engagement. Experience working with multidisciplinary teams across the project lifecycle. Commercial awareness and an understanding of project budgets, schedules and delivery outcomes. Experience undertaking or supporting dam safety and risk assessments will be highly regarded. Sound knowledge of relevant Australian Standards and industry guidelines. Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to project teams. Excellent communication, stakeholder management and relationship-building skills. Why Join SMEC? Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
