Position will serve as an Engineering Technician II in the Asheboro Resident Engineer’s Office and perform roadway/structure inspection work. Duties include project inspection of moderate projects, supervision of lower-level technicians, and may include assisting a survey party. Additional duties include completing daily dairies, sample cards, asphalt reports, NPDES reports, material received forms, survey notes, and monthly estimates. Qualified applicants should possess general knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. The position requires the ability to work safely in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures and construction site hazards such as traffic, heights, and uneven terrain. Moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing is required. Must be able to lift 50lbs and work nights and weekends as required. Selected applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety Toe Shoes Required. *Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.* Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 $41,206 - $72,113 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience with contract administration Knowledge and understanding of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications Experience performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications. Working knowledge of computer equipment, (iPads, desktop), software (HiCams and Share Point) and mathematical functions Experience maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
