Purpose As Instrumentation Engineer, you are responsible for supporting the design and delivery of safe, reliable, and cost effective engineering solutions that meet project needs and align with the organization’s operational and strategic objectives. Responsibilities You are responsible for the selection of methods and procedures, performance of the work, and optimization of the engineering and design within the scope of the specifications and client requirements, in compliance with international codes, company and industry standards and regulations. You are responsible for assisting in maintaining the Instrument Index, including interpreting Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and capturing instrumentation and control data in a structured format. You are responsible to support vendor document reviews and assist in incorporating vendor-supplied instrument data into the Instrument Index under guidance. You are responsible for assisting in ensuring consistency between P&IDs, Instrument Index, instrument data sheets, and basic diagrams (e.g., loop and termination diagrams), with supervision. You are responsible for contributing to the preparation and updating of deliverables such as instrument index, instrument data sheets, basic diagrams and to support specification and requisition documents. You are responsible for planning and completing activities and deliverables within the agreed time frame as well as for ensuring system interfaces. You ensure that your scope of work is delivered in accordance with both the contractual requirements and SBMâs internal requirements. You may be assigned as package engineer with technical responsibility for the design, procurement and manufacture of the package. You ensure that the applicable lessons learnt are used, understanding the impact of change within and across project system boundaries. You coordinate with vendors, subcontractors and third parties in accordance with contractual requirements and SBMâs internal requirements. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
