Candidates must reside within commuting distance of the office or be willing to relocate to the Portland metropolitan area. Employees are required to work onsite Tuesdays through Thursdays each week, with remote work flexibility on Mondays and Fridays, subject to business needs. This schedule supports collaboration, connection, and team engagement while providing flexibility for focused remote work. The Role: As an Engineering Consultant, you will play a key role in building important professional relationships that will strengthen our company. You will be a primary liaison and represent NW Natural interests on codes and standards boards, advisory councils, energy-related agencies and industry associations. As you develop a better understanding of the processes, you will perform an important function in driving sensible energy efficiency standards that help the region achieve its goals while ensuring the interests of stakeholders. You will collaborate with a team on evaluation, analysis, and strategic advancement of both pre commercial and early adoption natural gas technologies. You will be involved in driving research, producing technical analysis, deployment planning, and market adoption of innovative equipment and solutions. Additionally, you will play an important role in advising developers, builders, architects and engineering peers in bringing gas service to both existing and new projects. You will be backed by the support of NW Natural leaders from various disciplines as you assist external partners in developing natural gas infrastructure, metering and equipment solutions for projects. A strong focus of your work will be to support the continuation of the appropriate inclusion of natural gas in multifamily developments. Your work will bring you into frequent interaction with leaders in both our company and the energy industry. Your solid verbal and written communication skills will help to inform and advise others about trends and opportunities in emerging technology, code making, new construction and energy distribution. As a successful Engineering Consultant, you will be valued for helping NW Natural to achieve our objectives and providing high levels of support to our trade allies and our end-use customers. Are you an engineer with 3 or more years’ experience working in HVAC, mechanical systems and/or new construction? Are you not fully utilized or engaged in your present role? Do you want to put your engineering knowledge and problem-solving skills to use in a dynamic, professional work setting? Day to Day: Collaborating with developers, architects and engineers to assist them in bringing natural gas to their projects. Preparing for and participating in various codes and standards development activities. Engaging with internal NW Natural stakeholders (including senior executives) and informing them about various technical, equipment and building science topics. Gathering data and performing analysis regarding energy use and building performance. Using this to inform strategic planning. Monitoring emerging technical and engineering trends. Learning about the natural gas industry and NW Natural while developing your professional skills. Working with your peers both here and elsewhere in the country to share information about challenges, solutions and successes. Commitment to Company’s culture of safe work practices. Come on your first day with: Engineering degree is required, Mechanical degree preferred. 3+ years of experience in HVAC systems for residential, commercial and/or multi-family projects. Additional years’ experience on complex projects or work with building codes & standards could be required for level 3. Professional Engineer (P.E.) or the ability to obtain the designation within 2 years of hire. The P.E. designation is strongly preferred. Highly Preferred: Experience with, and/or strong understanding of building codes and standards -- especially regarding energy and mechanicals. Knowledge of the utility industry. This is not required but is a plus. Aptitude and experience overseeing multiple projects/functions while balancing priorities, resources, and deadlines. A curious nature combined with a genuine interest in problem solving and a strong desire to contribute. Written and verbal communication skills for presenting to professional audiences, technical customers and senior-level management. Analytical skills necessary to review technical information, especially regarding building mechanicals. Understanding of market trends in both the natural gas equipment and equivalent electric equipment industries. Possess and maintain a valid Oregon/Washington Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record. Must obtain a valid Oregon/Washington driver's license within 90 days if current valid license is from another state.
