This is a high-impact, senior leadership role where you'll partner closely with business stakeholders, product managers, and fellow engineers to shape what we build and how we build it. You'll help set technical direction, mentor others, demo products to leadership and business teams, and help define the future of mobile at Farmers. If you're an exceptional engineer who stays at the forefront of modern Android development and is excited about applying AI to real-world products, we want to hear from you. This is Hybrid opportunity. You will be located in our Woodland HIlls, CA office where you will be onsite 3x's a week. Internal Position Title: Application Developer V. What You'll Do Lead the architecture, design, and development of feature-rich, high-performance Android applications. Help own code quality, release readiness, and the overall technical health of our mobile codebase. Partner with business and product teams to translate ideas into validated, actionable roadmaps. Build proofs of concept to evaluate emerging features, technologies, and AI-driven capabilities. Present and demo products to business stakeholders, leadership, and cross-functional teams. Mentor and elevate fellow developers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing. Drive adoption of modern tools, frameworks, and best practices across the mobile team. What We're Looking For Core Engineering Expertise 7-10 years of professional Android development experience, with a track record of shipping production apps at scale. Deep mastery of Kotlin , including coroutines, Flow, and modern language features. Expert-level experience with Jetpack Compose and modern declarative UI development. Strong command of Android Jetpack libraries and architecture components (ViewModel, Navigation, Room, WorkManager, DataStore). Solid grasp of modern app architecture patterns — MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture , and modularization. Experience with dependency injection ( Hilt / Dagger ), reactive programming, and concurrency. Proficiency with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) is a strong plus. Strong testing discipline — unit, UI, and integration testing (JUnit, Espresso, Compose testing APIs). Experience with CI/CD pipelines, app performance optimization, and Play Store release management. Familiarity with REST/GraphQL APIs, secure data handling, and mobile security best practices — especially important in a regulated industry like insurance. Beyond Android Backend & APIs — Understanding of how the server side works, including REST design, authentication flows (OAuth, JWT), API versioning, and debugging issues that span client and server. You don't have to build the backend, but you should speak the language and push back on bad API contracts. Cloud & DevOps Fundamentals — Familiarity with cloud platforms (Heroku, GCP), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), and build automation. Knowing how releases actually ship — staged rollouts, feature flags, and crash monitoring (Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry). Security & Compliance — Especially critical in insurance. Secure storage, certificate pinning, encryption, PII handling, and awareness of regulations like CCPA/GDPR and industry-specific data rules, including the OWASP Mobile Top 10. Cross-Platform Awareness — Even though the app is native, understanding of Kotlin Multiplatform, Flutter, or React Native to inform architecture decisions and collaborate with teams that use them. System Design & Architecture — Modularization, scalability, offline-first patterns, caching strategies, and designing for maintainability across a large codebase and team. Product & Business Sense — Reading analytics (Firebase, Segment, Mixpanel), understanding A/B testing, conversion funnels, and tying engineering work to business outcomes. What We're Looking For (Continued) AI & Emerging Technology Practical understanding of AI and LLMs , and how to integrate them into mobile products. Experience with on-device ML ( Gemini Nano, ML Kit, TensorFlow Lite/LiteRT ) and/or cloud-based AI services is highly desirable. Curiosity and ability to research and adopt emerging Android technologies quickly. Soft Skills & Leadership Excellent communication skills — able to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Confident presenting and demoing products to business stakeholders and leadership. Strong collaboration skills and a proven ability to work effectively across teams. A mentor mindset — invested in growing the skills of those around you, fostering a strong code review culture, and translating technical tradeoffs for non-technical audiences. Skilled at estimating, scoping, and prioritizing work. Strong problem-solving ability; flexible, self-directed, and thrives under pressure. Product-minded — understands business goals and the "why" behind the work. Education Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Most developer ads you'll see are written in English: 18,397 of the 24,795. That doesn't tell you whether the job itself requires you to speak English or work in English daily, so read each posting carefully. Don't assume the language of the ad matches the language of the team.
The employers posting the most developer roles are Link Group (369 jobs), Upvanta (257), jobgether (226), and OfferZen (212). If you're applying to any of these, research their hiring patterns. They move fast and post often, which means they're either scaling hard or replacing people who didn't fit.
In your interview, expect this: 'Walk me through the last time you had to debug something that took you more than an hour. What was it, what did you try first, and what would you do differently?' Hiring managers ask this to see if you think systematically or just try random fixes. Have a real example ready with specifics.
