The role As an Engineering Officer Trainer, you'll help shape the future of Defence by delivering high-quality engineering education and training to military personnel. This is a unique opportunity to combine your engineering expertise with your passion for learning and development, equipping future Defence engineers with the technical knowledge, problem-solving ability and professional skills needed to support critical military operations. Day-to-day you'll be required to: Deliver engineering studies lessons, technical training and academic instruction to military trainees. Develop training materials, lesson plans and blended learning resources to support effective learning. Assess and marking engineering projects, reports, presentations and assignments. Provide feedback, coaching and guidance to help learners achieve their full potential. Support continuous improvement activities, quality assurance processes and training programme development. The role is based onsite at MOD Lyneham, and the set working times are Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week Essential experience of the Engineering Officer Trainer: Appropriate and relevant engineering knowledge and industry experience. Appropriate academic knowledge and experience within an engineering environment. Experience supporting learning, training, mentoring or development activities. Knowledge of engineering principles across mechanical, electronic, aviation or related disciplines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Qualifications for the Engineering Officer Trainer: Chartered Engineer status, or currently working towards Chartered Engineer status. Degree in an engineering discipline such as Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or Aviation Engineering. Security Clearance The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) security clearance for this role. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
