Tech Design Expert Controls & Grid Integration (BESS) Employment Type: Full-time Location: Pune Work Model: Hybrid, with availability during prototype commissioning Experience Required: 57 years Position Level: Senior Individual Contributor Technical Expert About the Role We are hiring a Tech Design Expert Controls & Grid Integration with strong experience in Energy Management Systems, control-system architecture, SCADA, grid synchronisation and power-system simulation for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems. The selected candidate will independently design EMS architecture, dispatch and control algorithms, protection schemes, SCADA systems and grid-compliance solutions. This is a hands-on technical expert position and not a people-management role. The skilled will work closely with Power Electronics, Thermal Management and BESS System Design specialists on projects ranging from 50 MWh to multi-GWh capacity. Key Responsibilities - Define the complete Energy Management System architecture, including supervisory control, real-time dispatch logic, State-of-Charge balancing and charge/discharge optimisation. - Prepare EMS specifications, Functional Requirements Documents, control block diagrams and state diagrams. - Design grid-synchronisation logic using frequency and voltage sensing, Phase-Locked Loop controls and grid-forming or grid-following operating modes. - Develop control algorithms for frequency regulation, droop control, virtual synchronous machine operation, voltage support and reactive-power injection. - Design protection schemes covering over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, anti-islanding and low-voltage ride-through. - Specify protection-relay settings and SCADA trip logic. - Define SCADA architecture for data acquisition, real-time monitoring, alarm management, remote dispatch and data logging. - Work with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3 and IEC 61850. - Conduct MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD simulations for voltage sags, frequency variations, grid faults and transient conditions. - Validate EMS and control-system performance against hardware and field-test data. - Collaborate with Power Electronics experts on inverter-control parameters, including PWM frequency, modulation index and ramp rates. - Coordinate with Thermal Management experts on thermal derating, shutdown thresholds and emergency-control logic. - Support load-flow, harmonic and transient-stability studies. - Conduct Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop and field-testing activities. - Lead control-system commissioning, grid-synchronisation testing, frequency-response validation and fault ride-through confirmation. - Support cost optimisation through suitable PLC/controller selection, firmware optimisation and simplified protection logic. Required Qualifications and Experience - 57 years of experience in control systems, electrical engineering or power-systems engineering. - Minimum 2 years of direct experience designing EMS, SCADA or grid-synchronisation solutions for BESS, renewable-energy or utility-scale systems. - Experience deploying control solutions to actual production systemsnot simulation-only assignments. - Strong understanding of AC power systems, three-phase circuits, RMS phasors, dq-domain control, short-circuit calculations and fault analysis. - Strong knowledge of control theory, including PID, state-space and nonlinear controls. - Hands-on experience designing PLL, DQ-frame, current-controller and voltage-controller algorithms. - Advanced proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD. - Experience modelling power systems and validating simulation results against hardware measurements. - Experience with PLC/RTU programming and IEC 61131-3. - Practical knowledge of SCADA, industrial control systems and protection-relay coordination. - Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements for critical infrastructure. - Knowledge of grid interconnection and compliance standards, including IEEE 1547, FERC 661 and applicable local grid codes. - Understanding of energy-storage dispatch optimisation, State-of-Charge management, frequency regulation and voltage support. - Experience with SIL, HIL, field testing and commissioning of control systems. - Ability to independently own control architecture from technical specification through commissioning. Preferred Candidate Profile - Experience working on MW- or GW-scale BESS, renewable-energy or utility projects. - Hands-on experience in grid-forming and grid-following inverter controls. - Familiarity with frequency response, reactive-power control, anti-islanding and fault ride-through. - Experience analysing oscilloscope or grid-analyser data during commissioning. - Exposure to COTS PLCs, RTUs, numerical relays and industrial communication networks. - Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot control-system failures in real operating environments. - Experience working with BESS .
