Assistant General Counsel

General Description: Performs highly complex legal work. Work involves interpreting laws, examining and preparing legal documents, and rendering legal advice and counsel. May train staff performing legal work. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work Location: This position is primarily in-office, with limited telecommuting days available based on team and agency needs. Regular onsite attendance is considered an essential function of this position. Examples of Work Performed: Researches points of law and analyzes statutes, case law, attorney general opinions, and administrative guidance relevant to agency operations, audits, and investigations. Advises the State Auditor, agency leadership, auditors, and staff on legal matters and the interpretation and application of laws and regulations. Prepares memoranda on legal matters; reviews and edits documents for legal impact and risk mitigation. Reviews proposed legislation to determine agency impact. Drafts bills and amendments for legislative consideration. Assists with preparation for legislative hearings, briefings, and testimony. Responds to requests for information under the Public Information Act. Drafts and reviews contracts, confidentiality agreements, and interagency agreements. Creates and leads internal legal trainings on legal matters. Assists in the representation of the agency with the Office of the Attorney General in civil actions brought by or against the agency on all legal issues.
