The Role Your role Bring your specialist knowledge and experience to a company managing 50% of the worlds MIPS and play a critical role in our modernization mission. In this role, youll design, build and maintain the high-volume business logic that runs on the mainframe. At the same time youll play a key role in refactoring legacy code to enable modern cloud and mobile applications to seamlessly interact with the mainframes core data. What you will do Maintain Performance Prevent decay and find efficiencies: Monitor the architecture and identify opportunities to optimize code to maintain and enhance mainframe performance. Debug and Test Find and fix: Debug, troubleshoot, and analyze complex system interactions to keep mission-critical applications running. Develop for the Future Bridge the gap: As an instrumental player in modernization, youll extract business logic from legacy systems for migration or integration with cloud-based services. Who You Are Required skills and experience Experience working as a software engineer on complex software projects. Excellent coding skills and solid development experience (Java) with debugging and problem-solving skills. Software development methodologies, with demonstrated experience developing scalable and robust software. Experienced in relational and NoSQL databases, data mapping, XML/JSON, REST-based web services. Knowledge of architecture design - Microservices architecture, containers (Docker & k8s), messaging queues. Deep understanding of OOP and design patterns. Preferred skills and experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Certification in one or more of the hyperscalers (Azure, AWS, and Google GCP) - otherwise, you can obtain certifications with Kyndryl. Experience with DevOps tools and modern engineering practices. Java, SpringBoot, Awareness of SOLID, Microservices Architecture, Awareness of AWS Services (EC2, Lambda, S3, APIGateway, SQS, SNS, Cloudwatch, ECS etc), CI CD ((Jenkins / Gitlab)) pipelines, SQL, noSQL (Mongo/ DynamoDB), Awareness of Security (Spring and AWS IAM), Design patterns, HLD, LLD, Team co-ordination, leading a team, System documentation, Agile, Terraform. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
