This is the most senior individual contributor seat Appian is filling in Chennai. The remit is defining the long term architectural vision and governance for the Appian platform, identifying systemic technical risks and leading task forces that resolve architectural bottlenecks, and building internal tools and SDKs that make other engineers faster. It also keeps a hands-on edge, including deep dive troubleshooting on complex production problems and leading development of core platform libraries and high risk prototypes. There is a formal architecture function to participate in, which the posting calls the Architectural Guild, where high impact design documents get reviewed. The AI thread is explicit as well: promoting AI native engineering practice and integrating AI features into the platform, with vector databases named alongside SQL and NoSQL. Who it is for: What the posting asks for: a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field. 15 or more years of software engineering experience with significant experience architecting large scale distributed systems. A strong understanding of data structures, algorithms and design patterns. Proven transformational leadership in technology migrations or strategies. Expertise in Java and cloud native ecosystems. Experience with AI and ML at scale and managing AWS multi region deployments. Expert level proficiency in Java or similar languages. Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD automation. Knowledge of high performance SQL, NoSQL and vector databases. An understanding of enterprise grade security and compliance. Soft skills the posting names: the ability to influence without authority and gain buy-in for technical shifts, business acumen connecting technical decisions to financial outcomes, skill in navigating complex technical debates and building consensus, and a passion for building a thriving engineering organisation. The actual day to day: defining long term architectural vision and governance for the platform. Identifying systemic technical risks and leading task forces to resolve architectural bottlenecks. Developing internal tools and SDKs that simplify infrastructure and improve developer productivity. Conducting deep dive troubleshooting on complex production issues. Promoting AI native engineering practice and integrating AI features into the platform. Leading development of core platform libraries and high risk prototypes. Taking part in the Architectural Guild and reviewing high impact design documents. Mentoring lead and senior engineers and representing Appian in the technical community. Ensuring operational resilience through self healing and highly available systems. Location and office reality: Chennai, India. The posting does not state office days or describe the role as remote. Honest fit guidance: this is an individual contributor role at a level where many companies would offer management instead, which is worth knowing if you want to stay technical. Appian has six roles in today's edition ranging from 3 years to this one, and they are separate requisitions on different teams rather than one job reposted. Note that only the Senior Software Engineer role in that set mentions a preference for a premier institution background; this one does not. .
Here's how to pick the right one and stand out in your application.

That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
