Job Summary Accurately and efficiently classify the mortality risk for proposed insureds within the approved underwriting authority limit. Demonstrate advanced medical knowledge and industry expertise to assess cases holistically rather than as isolated risk factors. Provide well-informed underwriting recommendations and participate in high-level case discussions with the Medical Director and Assistant Manager. Duties & Responsibilities Maintain strong knowledge of company products, underwriting guidelines, administrative systems, and medical factors affecting mortality and morbidity. Assess risk using actuarial data, reinsurance guidelines, relevant statistics, and professional judgment within established authority limits. Ensure referrals and escalations are completed in accordance with company policy. Participate in ongoing medical, financial, soft skills, and leadership training programs. Communicate with stakeholders regarding application status, additional requirements, corrections, reinsurance offers, reconsiderations, appeals, and final underwriting decisions. Participate in projects related to underwriting, customer service, workflow improvements, systems enhancements, training initiatives, and best practices. Accurately classify mortality risk for cases up to USD 500,000. Collaborate with reinsurers to negotiate placement of cases exceeding company binding authority or outside risk tolerance. Review referrals from Associate Underwriters for substandard and decline cases. Contribute to strategic underwriting discussions and provide recommendations for business improvement. Ensure compliance with all laws, regulations, company policies, and standard operating procedures. Perform additional duties as assigned. Required Work Experience Minimum 7 years of professional underwriting experience. Qualifications Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience. FLMI designation required. AALU/FALU designation or actively pursuing the designation. Certified Professional Underwriter preferred. Job Competencies Knowledge of life insurance underwriting standards and industry practices. Understanding of reinsurance treaties and underwriting agreements. Strong negotiation skills. Ability to work independently and support decisions with factual analysis. High attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer service orientation. Performance Criteria Achieve underwriting turnaround time of 72 hours or less for new business cases and 5 business days for reinstatements. Review 15+ new cases per day plus 15+ follow-up cases efficiently. Maintain high underwriting accuracy, including second checks and higher-risk assessments. Develop alternative placement options for future client opportunities. Balance risk assessment with business and premium objectives. Maintain clear and concise case documentation. Deliver consistent quality decisions for approvals, postponements, declines, and substandard offers with appropriate correspondence. Demonstrate proficiency in underwriting systems, insurance databases, and risk assessment tools. Apply a strategic, holistic approach considering regulatory, business, customer, and company interests. Maintain 50 continuing education (CE) credits as required by ALU/AHOU/CIU standards. Stay current with industry trends, medical advancements, and underwriting developments. .
