Role Summary : Linux System Engineer specialized in SUSE and Ubuntu environments, responsible for supporting Linux-based Point of Sale (POS) systems across retail stores along with core Data Centre Operations. The role focuses on OS deployment, patching, POS application uptime, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and remote store support to ensure seamless retail operations. The engineer will manage distributed Linux endpoints running POS workloads, ensure system stability, security compliance, and coordinate with network, application, and store teams for incident resolution in mission-critical retail environments. Responsibilities : Execute : - Installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of Linux servers and endpoints based on : 1. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 2. Ubuntu - Provide L2/L3 support for Linux-based POS machines deployed across retail stores. - Remote store troubleshooting for POS issues related to OS, services, permissions, network, and hardware interaction. - Linux patch management using native package managers and centralized tools like SUSE Manager and APT repositories. - OS hardening, performance tuning, log analysis, and security compliance for POS endpoints. - File system management, user/group management, permissions, IP configuration, and service management. - Troubleshooting boot issues, disk issues, service failures, and POS application dependency issues. - Experience in managing virtualized Linux environments using : 1. KVM 2. VMware vSphere 3. Nutanix AHV - Support Data Centre operations such as VM provisioning, OS installation, configuration, and monitoring. - Coordination with POS application, network, and hardware vendors for issue resolution. - Monitoring system logs and alerts, performing root cause analysis, and preventing repeat incidents. - Maintain SOPs, knowledge base articles, and build documents for store Linux POS environments. Qualification : - Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/IT or equivalent. - Minimum 6+ years of experience as a Linux Administrator. - Strong experience in Linux deployment and support in retail/store or distributed environments. - Excellent troubleshooting and system platform knowledge. Required Skillset : - Solid hands-on experience in SUSE Linux and Ubuntu administration. - Experience supporting Linux-based POS systems in retail stores. - Package management (Zypper, APT), patching, and repository management. - Hands-on with SUSE Manager for lifecycle and patch management. - Virtualization : KVM, VMware, Nutanix. - Platform support and deployment experience. - Good troubleshooting acumen and log analysis skills. - Understanding of network basics relevant to store/POS connectivity. Desirable Skills : - Basic shell scripting for automation and monitoring. - Exposure to enterprise backup tools like Commvault. - Knowledge of ITIL processes and ticketing tools (e.g., ServiceNow). - Understanding of security hardening and audit compliance for retail endpoints. .
