Senior Health Underwriter

Job Summary Assess all health applications accurately and efficiently by classifying and identifying morbidity risks in an effort to make fair and sound underwriting decisions. Demonstrate advanced medical and industry knowledge to evaluate cases holistically and provide recommendations regarding unfamiliar conditions, complex co-morbid conditions, and potentially high-risk cases under the guidance of Management. Duties & Responsibilities Assess all BAFGG health applications (new business, reinstatements, additions, and deductible changes) and determine appropriate risk classification within assigned authority limits. Apply actuarial data, reinsurance guidelines, underwriting guidelines, relevant statistics, and professional judgment in underwriting decisions. Ensure timely escalation of cases and completion of underwriting decisions within 2448 hours of receipt. Develop advanced knowledge of company products, underwriting guidelines, reinsurance guidelines, and administrative systems. Review applications for completeness, compliance, and supporting documentation required for policy issuance. Communicate application status, additional requirements, corrections, underwriting decisions, and reasons for decisions within defined turnaround times. Handle exclusion requests, appeals, and reconsiderations. Maintain familiarity with industry standards, practices, and health insurance products. Assist in creating and updating health questionnaires, applications, underwriting manuals, and guidelines. Participate in strategic underwriting discussions and contribute recommendations for process and product improvements. Discuss complex cases with Management and the Medical Director. Support audit requests, case management, reinsurance administration, and underwriting training activities. Participate in ongoing medical, soft skills, and leadership development programs. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, company policies, and standard operating procedures. Perform any other duties assigned by management. Required Work Experience Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience, preferably in health insurance. Qualifications Bachelors degree in Business, Science, or equivalent professional experience. FLMI designation required. FALU designation required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
