Are you a practical problem-solver who enjoys building, fixing, creating and figuring out how things work? Tūhura Otago Museum is looking for a Production & Facilities Technician to join our Facilities team in a varied, hands-on role supporting our exhibitions, visitor spaces and wider Museum operations. No two days will look quite the same. One day you might be fabricating or repairing an exhibition component, the next troubleshooting an interactive exhibit, helping with a gallery installation, completing maintenance around the Museum, or finding a practical solution to improve one of our visitor spaces. Working closely with our Facilities, Exhibitions, Collections and Visitor Experience teams, you’ll help make sure our Museum spaces and exhibitions are safe, functional, well maintained and presented to a high standard. About the role This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in what they produce and likes the variety that comes with working across different projects and environments. You’ll be involved in: Maintaining and repairing exhibitions and interactive exhibits Fabricating exhibition components, fixtures, supports, plinths and object mounts Supporting exhibition installations, deinstallations and gallery changeovers Undertaking basic carpentry, construction, painting, finishing and repair work Identifying and completing practical improvements across our public and visitor-facing spaces Supporting general building, preventative maintenance and Facilities projects Troubleshooting practical and mechanical problems and finding effective solutions Working carefully around Museum collections, objects and sensitive environments Supporting events, projects and other operational requirements across the Museum About you We’re looking for someone who is practical, reliable and comfortable turning their hand to a wide range of tasks. You’ll ideally bring experience in fabrication, joinery, maintenance, construction, workshop-based work or another hands-on trade or technical environment, along with confidence using a range of hand and power tools. You’ll also be someone who: Enjoys solving practical problems and finding workable solutions Has strong attention to detail and takes pride in producing quality work Can work independently and see a job through from start to finish Is proactive and notices things that could be repaired, improved or done better Works safely and methodically Can juggle different jobs and respond to changing priorities Enjoys working collaboratively with a range of people and teams Experience in a museum, gallery, exhibition or visitor attraction environment would be an advantage, but it isn’t essential. Experience in areas such as carpentry, joinery, engineering, fabrication, mount making or maintaining mechanical and interactive equipment would also be valuable. Why Tūhura Otago Museum? This is an opportunity to bring your practical skills into a pretty unique working environment. You’ll get to work behind the scenes of one of Dunedin’s most loved cultural institutions, contributing directly to the exhibitions, spaces and experiences our visitors enjoy every day. If you like variety, enjoy making and fixing things, and want a role where you can see the impact of your work throughout the Museum, we’d love to hear from you. For more information, please contact our Head of People and Culture at HR@tuhura.nz Applications close Friday 11 September.
