The Role As a Senior Engineering Officer, you will play a key role in shaping Brisbane's growth by providing expert engineering assessment and advice on development applications and infrastructure outcomes. Working within Development Services, you will assess a broad range of civil infrastructure matters, including roads, transport and traffic, stormwater drainage, hydraulics, street lighting, and donated assets, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, Council standards, and industry best practice. You will work closely with developers, consultants, government agencies, and internal stakeholders to deliver practical and sustainable development outcomes. The role involves reviewing engineering reports, preparing technical recommendations and approval conditions, exercising delegated authority, and providing guidance and support to colleagues. To be successful you will have: tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering minimum 5 years' experience in civil engineering, development assessment, or civil infrastructure planning, design and delivery experience with roads, transport, traffic, stormwater drainage, hydraulics, and related infrastructure strong knowledge of relevant legislation, engineering standards, and development approval processes experience in local government, development services, TMR, or a similar infrastructure environment proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality outcomes in a complex stakeholder environment strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills proficiency in engineering and business systems, including Microsoft Office current C Class Driver Licence. Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
