The Whakapapa whānau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area. In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola. Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding region, some even third or fourth generation. We have an exciting permanent opportunity to join our Whakapapa Maintenance team as a Lift Mechanic. We are seeking people who are passionate about delivering a world class ski experience to our valued guests. Mō te tūnga | About the role As a Lift Mechanic, you’ll be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of our ski area lifts, along with other equipment and systems that keep our guests moving up the mountain. No two days are ever the same – from riding the slopes to reach your worksite, to tackling challenges in all weather conditions, you’ll be putting your skills to the test in both preventative and reactive maintenance modes. Key responsibilities include: Completing daily lift servicing and pre-start checks Carrying out scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs Troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues Overhauling, servicing, and rebuilding lift systems and components Maintaining lifts and associated equipment to optimum standards Installing upgrades and replacing parts with new technology and systems You don’t need to have worked as a Lift Mechanic before – we’re looking for people with a solid trade background who can bring their skills to the ski industry. If you’re mechanically minded, safety focused, and up for a challenge, we want to hear from you. Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako ōu | Your skills and experience Ideally, you’ll bring a mix of the following: Engineering or Mechanical NZ Trade Certificate (or equivalent) are ideal but not essential 2+ years’ experience in a relevant field is ideal but not essential Previous lift maintenance or lift operating experience is an added bonus Ability to work in challenging weather and environmental conditions, with good physical and mental endurance Experience working at heights, including the use of relevant abseil and safety equipment Broad knowledge of maintenance-related skills The ability to take the initiative and work unsupervised when required The ability to effectively organise and manage a range of priorities Full NZ driver license or international equivalent (ideally) Ability to ski or ride is required (on job training provided) An understanding of and commitment to following health and safety procedures with the ability to identify hazards, ensuring you, your team and our guests get home safely. We know our industry is specialised, so you don’t need to tick every box. What matters most is the right attitude, a willingness to learn, an aptitude for the technical side of the role, and pride in delivering safe, high-quality work. As part of the recruitment process, preferred candidates may be invited up the maunga for a taster day to experience the alpine environment, meet the team and get a feel for the role.
