About the role As Sous Chef, you will work closely with the Head Chef and hotel management to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the kitchen. This is a hands-on position suited to an experienced chef who enjoys working in a country hotel environment and can confidently support the kitchen operation, maintain high food standards and assist with the day-to-day running of the kitchen. Key responsibilities Preparing and cooking food to a consistently high standard Assisting the Head Chef with the daily operation of the kitchen Planning and organising food preparation and cooking Assisting with menu planning, specials and seasonal dishes Ensuring dishes are prepared and presented consistently according to hotel standards Supervising and supporting other kitchen staff during service Delegating kitchen tasks and assisting with training junior kitchen staff where required Maintaining high standards of food quality, hygiene and presentation Monitoring food preparation, portion control and wastage Assisting with ordering, receiving and storing food supplies About you Relevant professional chef/cookery qualification or at least 3 years' relevant professional chef experience Previous experience working as a Sous Chef, Second Chef, Chef de Partie or in a comparable senior kitchen position Strong practical cooking skills across a range of menu styles Experience working in a commercial restaurant, hotel or similar food-service environment The ability to work independently and make sound decisions during service Experience supervising or supporting other kitchen staff Good knowledge of food safety, hygiene and safe kitchen practices Strong organisation and time-management skills The ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen A positive attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a small team About us The Whangamomona Hotel is a traditional country hotel and restaurant located in the small rural settlement of Whangamomona on the Forgotten World Highway in Taranaki. We offer a friendly, relaxed working environment and are looking for someone who enjoys country hospitality, good food and being part of a close-knit team.
