About Hayes Metals Group Hayes Metals Group is a fourth-generation, family-owned business with nearly 100 years of history in the metals industry. The Opportunity We are looking for an Accountant to join our small, hands-on finance team. The successful candidate will support the CFO and take ownership of a broad range of accounting duties across our New Zealand and Australian entities. There is real scope to grow with the business over time. This is not an admin role. You will need to think, problem-solve, and get across the detail in a genuinely complex multi-entry environment. Key Responsibilities CFO Support • Day-to-day assistance to the CFO across finance operations and reporting • Preparation and coordination of information for auditors, insurers and banking facilities • Supporting month-end and year-end close processes Accounts Payable Control • Full AP control across NZ and Australian entities — invoice receipt, coding, approval tracking and posting • Loading and managing domestic and international payment runs, ensuring payments are authorised, accurate and on time • Maintaining creditor balances — regular reconciliation of supplier ledgers, clearing aged items and investigating discrepancies • Monitoring AP aging and following up outstanding items to keep the creditor ledger clean • Processing imported scrap supplier invoices — prepayments, costing, final payments and stock receipt • Managing international supplier payments across NZ and Australian entities • Ensuring all creditor accounts are reconciled to supplier statements at month-end Foreign Currency & Banking • Daily foreign-currency bank reconciliations (AUD, USD, EUR) • Processing foreign customer receipts and FX journal entries • Recording FX forward contract settlements • Month-end foreign-currency revaluation Intercompany & Multi-Entity Accounting • Intercompany journals across NZ and Australian entities • Intercompany material transfer entries and reconciliations • Intercompany margins calculations and control • Month-end intercompany balance settlements and variance investigation Accounts Receivable & Export Invoicing • Creating AR invoices for export container sales • Processing customer receipts and maintaining debtor balances • Raising decommissioning and commissioning invoices and submitting via customer portals Payroll • End-to-end New Zealand payroll processing across group entities — weekly wages from clock data, plus leave administration and balances • Coordinating payroll deadlines with the Australian team and external accountants • Ensuring payroll compliance with NZ statutory requirements • IRD payday filing and PAYE payments Rental Activities • Manage commercial rental activities & tenants’ recharges and payments GST & Compliance • Monthly GST preparation NZ entities • Quarterly FBT returns and payments (motor vehicles and fuel cards) • GST and income tax returns and annual financial statements for smaller group entities Stocktake • Participating in the annual group stocktake • Stock reconciliation and inventory variance support Systems Implementation • Active involvement in the implementation of the group's new accounting software • Supporting integration between the new platform and the operational inventory system • Contributing to process improvement as the new system beds in What We're Looking For Essential • Degree in Accounting or Finance and 5+ years of relevant experience • Solid grasp of double-entry accounting, reconciliations and journals • Comfortable working across multiple entities simultaneously • High attention to detail and ability to work independently Highly Regarded • Experience with Accredo or similar NZ accounting platforms • Multi-currency or intercompany accounting exposure • Prior involvement in an accounting software implementation The right fit We are looking for an experienced accountant who can step in and take ownership from the outset.
