This job description is for the role of a 1:1 Learning Assistant in the Secondary School (SLA) Purpose We believe that all students should be able to achieve their potential at Bangkok Prep and that everyone in the community is united in that goal. All young people are different and some students will follow an adapted curriculum and/or access services at school (short or long term) to enable them to do their best. The student success team involves our school counsellors, EAL department and learning support department. This role would align most closely with the learning support team but is also a vital role for helping to ensure we have an active and effective support plan in place for the child. The SLA will be a key member of the team around the child and a voice and advocate for the child in school. Supporting the children: The SLA will be responsible for: ● Working with an individual child under the guidance of class teachers and the Student Success Team. ● Providing regular feedback to the Learning Support Teacher and Assistant Head Curriculum about pupil progress and barriers to learning. ● Where necessary, working with relevant outside agencies or other key adults that support the child beyond school. ● Meeting with registered parents and family of the child at student led conferences and regular review meetings. ● Supporting all students to act in a way that promotes their wellbeing and safety. ● Supporting the child they work with in areas of development including pastoral and academic areas. ● Providing in class support for a student as well withdrawn support and supporting at break and lunchtimes as needed. ● Planning activities for the child they are working with, and assessing the child, under guidance from academic staff and the student success team. ● Motivating and encouraging the child positively and consistently. ● Praising students and using classroom reward systems to develop their self esteem. ● Following the systems and documentation of the whole school behaviour policy where needed. ● Supporting learners with using the equipment and materials provided safely. ● Developing knowledge and understanding of a range of learning support techniques that can be used to support children. ● Developing knowledge of the particular needs of the child and seek advice from the Student Success Team, class teacher and outside agencies as required. ● Development of the student’s individual educational plans we call “pupil passports” at Bangkok Prep. This includes input to and communication about targets. ● Planning activities and learning for students that allow them to make progress towards their targets. ● Escorting children around the school between lessons safely and in an organised and sensible manner. ● Actively developing their own professional practice. ● Attend in service training and relevant meetings in order to keep up to date with developments in working with children with special educational needs. ● To support the transition of students between schools and sections of the school. ● Contribute to the Student Success Team actions and targets and the development plans of the School. Supporting the School and representing the school within the community: The Secondary 1:1 Learning Assistant will: ● Contribute to the development of the whole-school, including attendance at relevant meetings, in-service training days and through support of school functions; ● Liaise and communicate with parents effectively when necessary; ● Maintain a full application of the principles laid down in school policy documentation - e.g. Code of Conduct, Dress Code, Staff Handbook etc. Person specification: ● A good command of English (verbal and written) ● Able to relate well with children, colleagues and all stakeholders ● A creative thinker and able to work on own initiative as well as part of a team ● Proactive and positive thinking ● Strong communication skills ● Good self-management and time keeping skills ● Have knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of pupils. ● Have an interest in how children learn and behave ● Be a responsible and trustworthy role model ● Have patience with children who find conforming to rules and expectations difficult ● Have patience and be flexible and innovative with a clear understanding of how children might behave who find learning new concepts and remembering taught concepts difficult ● Respect and maintain confidentiality with the exception of safeguarding observations that must be reported to the DSL. ● Building team commitment with colleagues and students. ● Able and willing to take positive actions to improve the quality of students’ learning. ● An education or interest in learning support is an advantage. ● Proactive and positive thinking with the ability to self-manage and prioritise tasks. ● Excellence in teaching and learning practice. ● Ability to differentiate learning materials. ● A willingness to learn about the school curriculum and ways to ensure it is inclusive and challenging for all. ● A willingness and desire to develop your own professional practice by engaging with the expertise in school, external materials and training opportunities. Social, ethical, legal and human issues ● Support all ​members of the Bangkok Prep Community equally and without prejudice. ● Promotion of the school’s inclusive approach to students of all backgrounds, including those of different ethnicity; sexuality; gender; social background; ability/disability both physical and mental; language ability; beliefs / spirituality; age; marital status; nationality / citizenship; parental/family status and influence. The duties and responsibilities of this post may vary from time to time according to the changing demands of the school and or the department. This job description may be reviewed at the reasonable discretion of the Head of Secondary and in consultation with the post holder. The performance of a 1:1 Secondary Learning Assistant in the above key responsibility areas is formatively reviewed over the year as part of the school’s appraisal process.
