Technical Advisor – Poultry

The Opportunity PIRSA is seeking a Technical Advisor - Poultry, to provide specialist expertise supporting South Australia's preparedness for emergency animal disease events. This is an opportunity to apply your knowledge of poultry production systems, animal health and biosecurity to inform risk assessments, operational planning and response activities in partnership with industry, government and technical stakeholders. The role will play a key part in ensuring response decisions are informed by contemporary scientific knowledge and industry expertise, supporting the protection of animal health and South Australia's poultry industry. How You'll Make a Difference As the Technical Advisor - Poultry, you will: Provide expert technical advice on poultry production systems, poultry health, disease impacts and emergency response activities to support critical operational and strategic decision-making. Analyse technical information, surveillance findings and emerging risks to help shape response priorities, planning activities and biosecurity outcomes. Contribute specialist expertise to preparedness, response and recovery activities, ensuring response strategies are informed by contemporary science, industry practices and operational requirements. Identify technical risks, operational constraints and industry implications, providing practical, evidence-based recommendations to support informed decision-making. Develop and maintain strong partnerships with industry representatives, research organisations, laboratories, universities and government agencies to support coordinated response efforts. Prepare technical briefings, guidance materials, situation reports and response documentation that support effective communication and delivery of response activities. Support the continuous improvement of response procedures, operational guidance and preparedness activities that strengthen South Australia's capability to respond to emergency animal disease incidents. About You You will bring: Demonstrated expertise in poultry production, poultry health, biosecurity, animal health or a related specialist field, supported by relevant qualifications and/or substantial industry experience. Experience applying technical knowledge in operational, regulatory, emergency management or biosecurity environments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex information, identify risks and develop practical, evidence-based solutions. The ability to work effectively in dynamic, time-critical environments while managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality advice. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, practical advice for a range of audiences. Proven relationship-building skills and the ability to collaborate with industry, government, research and community stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes. Knowledge of emergency animal disease management, poultry health, biosecurity, disease surveillance, AIIMS and/or AUSVETPLAN frameworks will be highly regarded.
