Company Accountant | Leadership Opportunity Lead the finance function today. Grow alongside an organisation investing in its future. FINNZ Chartered Accountants is recruiting on behalf of a well-established organisation based in New Plymouth. We're seeking an experienced accountant who is looking for more than simply their next accounting role. As Company Accountant , you'll lead the organisation's finance function while becoming a trusted member of the management team. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you'll play an important role in supporting the organisation's day-to-day financial operations while contributing to informed decision-making and its continued success. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership, building trusted relationships and becoming part of an organisation for the long term. While the finance function is your primary responsibility, the organisation is entering the next stage of its development, creating opportunities to broaden your contribution as the organisation continues to evolve. We're not simply looking for someone to manage our finances—we're looking for someone to become part of our future. If you're looking for a role where your experience will be respected, your judgement trusted and your contribution genuinely valued, we'd love to hear from you. About the Organisation Our client is a respected and well-established private tertiary education provider, preparing future leaders for New Zealand's and the global hospitality industry. Its approach is distinctive. Rather than simply delivering qualifications, the organisation believes the best learning comes through experience, responsibility, encouragement and meaningful relationships. This philosophy shapes not only the way it educates its students, but also the way it supports and develops its own people. The organisation supports both domestic and international students, with programmes delivered in New Zealand and selected international markets. This international outlook brings diverse perspectives while remaining grounded in the values, relationships and culture that have shaped the organisation for many years. People are encouraged to take ownership of their work, contribute ideas and support one another, recognising that every role plays an important part in the organisation's success. As it enters the next stage of its development, the organisation is looking for someone who wants to become part of that journey—not simply fill a position. Your Role Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you'll take ownership of the organisation's finance function while contributing as a valued member of the management team. This is a broad and rewarding accounting role where you'll ensure the organisation's financial operations run smoothly, provide reliable financial information and help support confident business decisions. Working alongside experienced external accounting advisers, you'll lead the day-to-day finance function while contributing to organisational planning, continuous improvement and practical decision-making across the business. The role is well suited to an experienced Company Accountant who enjoys working across all aspects of a finance function. What makes this opportunity different is the opportunity to build trusted relationships, contribute beyond the numbers and gradually broaden your involvement as the organisation continues to evolve. Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership Lead the day-to-day finance function. Prepare monthly management reports, budgets and forecasts. Manage cash flow and maintain accurate financial records. Ensure the integrity of the accounting system and maintain strong financial controls. Business Support Work closely with the Chief Executive and management team. Prepare financial information to support Board reporting. Provide practical financial advice and commercial insights to managers. Support organisational projects and continuous improvement initiatives as opportunities arise. Governance & Compliance Coordinate year-end reporting, audit and statutory compliance alongside external accounting advisers. Maintain sound financial governance and internal controls. Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting and processes. Provide day-to-day guidance and support to a member of the finance team. Who Will Succeed Here? Success in this role will come from the person as much as their technical capability. You'll enjoy taking ownership, producing accurate work and helping others make informed decisions. You're approachable, practical and dependable, with the confidence to build trusted relationships across the organisation. You'll be equally comfortable working independently and contributing as part of a collaborative management team. You understand that good finance is about more than producing accurate numbers—it's about providing sound judgement, practical advice and helping the organisation succeed. Whether your experience has been gained in public practice, commercial accounting or a combination of both, what matters most is your ability to apply your experience, communicate effectively and build positive relationships. You'll bring: Proven experience in a broad accounting or finance role. Strong financial reporting, budgeting and cash flow management skills. Sound commercial judgement and a practical, solutions-focused approach. Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail. The ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of an organisation. High levels of integrity, professionalism and discretion. Professional accounting qualifications are welcomed but are not the defining measure of success. Experience, capability and personal qualities are what matter most. For the right person, the organisation is committed to supporting ongoing professional development and further study. Why This Role Is Different There are many accounting roles where you'll manage the numbers. This role offers the opportunity to become part of something more. You'll join an organisation where people know one another, work collaboratively and value long-term relationships. You'll work closely with the Chief Executive, contribute as a member of the management team and play an important role in supporting an organisation with a clear sense of purpose and a thoughtful vision for the future. As part of the management team, you'll also gain exposure to the broader activities of the organisation, providing opportunities to contribute beyond the finance function as the organisation continues to evolve. If you're looking for somewhere to make a meaningful contribution, continue learning and build the next chapter of your career within a respected organisation, we'd love to hear from you. Could This Be Your Next Chapter? If you're looking for a role where your experience will be valued, your judgement trusted and your contribution genuinely appreciated, we'd welcome a confidential conversation. To express your interest or arrange a confidential discussion, please contact FINNZ Chartered Accountants . All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Right now there are 11,726 open accountant positions on WorkMundi. The US leads with 3,242 jobs, followed by India (2,285), Australia (1,359), Philippines (629), and Singapore (441). If you've been thinking your options are limited to one country, look again.

One practical move: search by country first, not just by job title. The accountant role differs in scope, compliance, and day-to-day work depending on where you'd be based. A position in Australia may involve different tax codes, audit standards, and reporting cycles than one in India or the US. Narrowing by location before you read descriptions saves time and helps you spot roles that actually fit your expertise.

When you interview for an accountant role, expect this question: "Walk me through how you'd handle a transaction that doesn't reconcile." Hiring managers ask it because they want to see your troubleshooting method, not just whether you found the error. Practice explaining your logic step-by-step — what you check first, how you document it, and how you escalate if needed. That matters more than the final answer.

WorkMundi offers a free interview rehearsal using your browser voice (no AI, unlimited takes) and a paid AI interview option that listens live and writes your responses as you speak.
