Senior Media Advisor – Fixed Term – Wellington

Mō tēnei tūranga - about the role We are looking for an experienced, savvy and confident Senior Media Advisor. You’ll need a highly tuned risk and opportunity radar, excellent writing skills and the ability to work confidently and at pace across Fire and Emergency. Previous experience in frontline media management, ideally within an operational agency, is essential. This is not simply a reactive media management role, you’ll need to demonstrate proven experience in spotting, writing and pitching proactive stories that support organisational goals. You’ll also need to be able to turn your hand to Public Information Management at emergencies, reviewing responses to questions under the Official Information Act, and producing content for other channels. This is a busy and challenging role, and you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to manage multiple priorities, stay calm and deal with a range of topic areas. This is a fixed term opportunity from ASAP – 26th February 2027. Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga - What you’ll bring to the role: Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communications and engagement plans with sound experience in media management. Experience undertaking a Public Information Manager role in an emergency event, or significant experience in crisis and issues management, ideally within an operational context. The ability to provide authoritative professional advice to all levels of management on matters associated with media and government communications To be successful in this role, we’d expect you will have: A relevant tertiary qualification in communications or related field Availability to work rostered after hours or deploy to incidents at short notice Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines Excellent ability to write clear, accurate and engaging communications for a range of channels (including digital channels) Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative and respectful team member Working knowledge of relevant legislation affecting communications in New Zealand, including the Official Information Act and the Privacy Act Photography, videography or other multimedia skills Digital story telling experience Ability to liaise with a wide range of audiences The salary range for this role is $117,415 to $130,461 (pro-rata), dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
