Heavy Machine Operator

Dominion Salt is looking for an experienced and practically minded Field Operator to join our team at Lake Grassmere. This is a hands-on outdoor role operating heavy machinery and helping manage the solar salt-making process. We need someone who can notice when something is not right, work out the likely cause and take practical action before a small issue becomes a bigger problem. Weather, water movement, pond levels, gates, channels and equipment all affect salt production. The right person will understand how changes in one area can affect another and will be confident making sensible decisions in the field. What you will be doing Operating excavators, loaders and other heavy machinery. Monitoring pond levels, brine movement and solar field conditions. Responding to changing weather and operational conditions. Identifying faults and finding practical solutions. Maintaining drains, banks, gates, channels and other field infrastructure. Carrying out earthworks, civil construction and general maintenance activities. Managing several priorities and working independently when required. Completing operational checks and documentation. Contributing to a safe, reliable and efficient salt-making process. What we are looking for You will ideally have: At least three years’ heavy machinery operating experience. Wheels, Tracks and Rollers endorsements. Advanced excavator experience. Loader operating experience. Strong practical fault-finding and problem-solving skills. Good mechanical aptitude. An understanding of how water, pressure, gravity and flow affect a system. The ability to understand cause and effect and anticipate what may happen next. Experience in civil construction, earthworks, farming, plumbing or a similar practical environment. Good spatial awareness and attention to detail. The ability to plan and complete work in the right sequence. A proactive approach and a willingness to take ownership. The physical fitness required for outdoor and hands-on work. A strong commitment to health and safety. A drive to learn and an inquisitive nature. You will be someone who notices changes, asks questions and keeps investigating until the cause of a problem is understood. You will be comfortable working with machinery, water movement, earthworks and changing weather conditions.
