The National Assessments Bureau (NAB) is seeking experienced, intellectually curious analysts to assess significant national security and foreign policy issues affecting New Zealand. About DPMC and NAB The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet | Te Tari o te Pirimia me te Rūnanga Kāwanatanga (DPMC) supports the government of the day by leading, advising, stewarding and delivering work across the public sector, and by supporting the Governor-General, Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers. NAB is part of the New Zealand Intelligence Community and DPMC’s National Security and Resilience Group. It provides independent, all-source intelligence assessments and briefings to support government decision-making on national security and foreign policy. Our work is guided by the National Security Intelligence Priorities, with a focus on the Pacific, Indo-Pacific and wider global developments affecting New Zealand’s strategic interests. The roles We recruit at three levels: Senior Analyst For applicants with significant analytical experience, deep subject-matter expertise and leadership capability. Senior Analysts lead complex analytical programmes, engagement initiatives and organisational priorities. Indicative starting salary: $111,258–$121,489. Analyst For applicants with relevant work experience, strong analytical capability and subject-matter knowledge, or the ability to quickly develop deep expertise. Indicative starting salary: $82,751–$87,348. Graduate Analyst For applicants for whom this is generally a first professional role. For this recruitment round, while we will consider applications from graduates, our primary focus is on more senior roles. Indicative starting salary: $69,636 - $73,504 p/a. What you will do | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi You will: Develop deep expertise in an area of national security priority. Monitor developments and assess emerging risks, trends and implications for New Zealand. Analyse large volumes of intelligence and information from a range of sources. Produce clear, independent, and well-reasoned assessments. Build relationships to test your thinking and strengthen your analysis. Brief senior decision-makers on complex issues. If applying for a Senior Analyst role , this carries significant responsibility within NAB. Senior Analysts lead complex analytical work programmes and engagement initiatives, contribute to organisational priorities, and are recognised experts within their fields. About You - Mōu Anō You will have Strong analytical, research and critical-thinking skills. The ability to test competing perspectives and form sound judgements. Clear and confident written and verbal communication. Intellectual curiosity, adaptability and comfort working with ambiguity. Strong self-management and the ability to deliver under pressure. A collaborative approach and commitment to team performance and wellbeing. Sound judgement when handling sensitive information. The resilience to work in a physically secure environment. You will be a collaborative and self-aware colleague who supports others, gives and receives feedback constructively, and contributes positively to team wellbeing, trust and performance. Knowledge of government, intelligence assessment or policy processes would be useful. Relevant language capability, cultural competence, and experience or study relating to the Pacific, wider Indo-Pacific, or other National Security Intelligence Priorities would also be advantageous.
