Location: Christchurch We are looking for a hands-on Workshop Manager with trade-qualified Diesel Mechanic experience to join our growing team. This key leadership role is based at our Christchurch branch, a brand-new, state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility that sets a new benchmark for repair quality and efficiency. This is a key leadership role, responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day workshop operations, coordinating multiple departments, and ensuring high‑quality, customer‑focused repairs. We welcome candidates with experience across a range of heavy vehicle environments, including transport repair, fleet maintenance, service centres, and heavy mechanical workshops. Previous accident repair experience is not essential. Over time, you will develop the knowledge and confidence to lead both mechanical and accident repair operations. Reporting to the Branch Manager, you will lead the workshop team, manage workflow and timelines, and ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required standard. What you’ll be doing Oversee day‑to‑day workshop operations, ensuring smooth workflow across mechanical, panel, and other departments. Lead and support supervisors and team members to meet deadlines, quality standards, and safety requirements. Provide hands‑on technical guidance and step in on mechanical work where required to keep jobs moving. Assess vehicles on arrival, identifying mechanical faults, wear and tear, and any additional repair needs, and advise customers or their representatives. Conduct or oversee pre‑repair checks, including road tests where appropriate. Coordinate all aspects of the repair process to ensure all quoted items are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with timeframes. Carry out final inspection and road testing to ensure completed work meets quality, safety, and customer‑expectation standards. Liaise with internal teams, customers, and suppliers to support clear communication and smooth job progression. Identify training and development opportunities to build capability and performance across the team. Ensure all work is completed in line with Royans’ policies, procedures, and safety standards. What you’ll bring Trade‑qualified Diesel Mechanic (essential). Extensive hands‑on experience in heavy vehicle mechanical work, such as transport repair, fleet maintenance, service centres, or similar heavy mechanical environments. Experience in a leadership or supervisory role (e.g. Workshop Manager, Supervisor or similar) with responsibility for teams and workflow. Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify mechanical faults and additional repair requirements. Ability to coordinate multiple departments and manage job flow, timelines, and workshop performance. Solid computer literacy and the ability to learn our workshop system (iBodyshop) to deliver an efficient and effective service. Excellent communication skills, a positive work ethic, and a strong focus on safety and quality. Truck and forklift licence (preferred).
