About the role Vuly is an Australian outdoor play company. For over 15 years we've designed and built trampolines, swing sets and play equipment sold in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Europe and Asia. We're expanding into connected consumer hardware, and we're looking for a Lead Embedded Software Engineer to own the embedded systems behind it. This is a hands-on lead role: you'll set the technical direction, build the hardest parts yourself, and guide a small team of embedded engineers. Based onsite in our Kuala Lumpur office, working with hardware, product and design teams across Australia and Asia. What you'll do Own the architecture. Set the embedded system architecture and technical direction, making sure firmware decisions are robust, scalable and consistent — and that the codebase stays clean, documented and production-ready. Stay hands-on. Personally design, develop and debug the most complex and highest-risk parts of the firmware, working with microcontrollers and sensors. Integrate the system. Guide the integration of sensors, storage and wireless communication into a cohesive product experience, and oversee the on-device algorithms that sit on top of them. Lead the team. Provide day-to-day technical direction and mentoring to our embedded engineers, and act as the escalation point for technical and delivery decisions. Work across the business. Partner closely with hardware, product and design to turn concepts into reliable, responsive embedded code. Push performance. Optimise for performance, battery life and real-world robustness. We also want you exploring and championing AI-assisted tools and workflows that make the whole team faster. What you'll bring Essential • A relevant degree from a reputable university (e.g. Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science) • 5+ years as a professional software engineer, including experience leading or mentoring other engineers • Strong embedded C and FreeRTOS development for microcontroller-based systems, including ownership of system architecture • Familiarity with real-time systems, sensor integration or wireless communication • Comfortable with low-power design, peripheral protocols (I²C / SPI / UART) and firmware optimisation • Fluent English, written and spoken • Curious and collaborative, and open to modern tooling including AI-assisted programming Nice to have • Machine learning at the edge (TinyML, sensor-based classification) • Experience with consumer electronics, interactive devices, robotics, wearables or gaming hardware • ESP32 platform experience (highly preferred) • Embedded UI libraries such as LVGL • Prior team-lead or people-leadership experience • Mandarin fluency Why Vuly • Real product, real scale. When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
