About the role Steel Fixer (Tie Hand) – a skilled tradesperson responsible for measuring, cutting, bending, tying, and placing reinforcing steel and mesh on construction projects across New Zealand. You will fabricate and install reinforcing cages, place reinforcing in slabs, columns, beams, foundations, and other structural elements, working to drawings, specifications, and bar bending schedules to ensure accuracy and quality. You will operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and small machinery safely, and maintain correct tolerances, spacing, and cover in all reinforcing work. Key responsibilities Measure, cut, bend, tie, and place reinforcing steel and mesh Fabricate and install reinforcing cages Place reinforcing in slabs, columns, beams, foundations, and other structural elements Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and small machinery safely Work to drawings, specifications, and bar bending schedules to ensure accuracy and quality Maintain correct tolerances, spacing, and cover in all reinforcing work Comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and all site-specific requirements Identify, manage, and report hazards, near misses, and incidents Wear and maintain required PPE at all times Ensure reinforcing is installed to meet project specifications and industry standards About you Minimum 2 years' experience as a steel fixer or reinforcing steel placer Skilled in safe handling, tying, cutting, and placement of reinforcing steel Ability to read and understand construction drawings and bar bending schedules Experience working on commercial, civil, or infrastructure construction projects Current Site Safe Passport (or equivalent recognised safety card) High School Diploma (NCEA Level 1/2) or equivalent New Zealand Residency or valid work visa Reliable own transport to and from sites Physically fit and healthy and able to perform repetitive manual tasks in varying site conditions Reliable, punctual, and hard-working
