Chief Investment Officer (Part-Time)

A private single-family office in Hong Kong, founded by a European entrepreneur and industrialist, is appointing its first Chief Investment Officer. This is a whole-of-wealth mandate. The portfolio spans private equity, hedge funds and listed securities today, and will extend into real estate. The office itself is new. You would be the first investment hire, inheriting an existing portfolio and building the process around it. If you are looking to join something already running, this is not that. If you have wanted to build one properly, from the allocation policy upward, the chance does not come up often. WHAT YOU WILL OWN - The investment strategy. Asset allocation across public and private markets, the policy behind it, and the risk framework that holds it together. - An existing book of roughly thirty private equity and hedge fund positions: monitoring, capital calls, redemption and replacement decisions, and consolidated reporting. - The manager relationships. Due diligence on new opportunities, and negotiation on the existing ones — fees, terms, side letters, transparency, capacity. - Counterparty relationships: prime brokers, custodians and banks. - Deployment of a substantial recurring income stream that at present has no disciplined home. - Two listed portfolios at Interactive Brokers, including an AI-supported systematic trading programme. Statistical strategies first, with research and AI running on the office's own local infrastructure rather than through a cloud provider. External quantitative developers to govern: milestone acceptance, out-of-sample and walk-forward validation, paper-trading gates, hard risk limits. - Origination. Bringing opportunities to the principal rather than waiting to be asked. - In time, direct alternatives and real estate, including land and buildings. - The build-out of the office itself: processes, tooling, and later hires. WHAT YOU BRING - Ten years or more on the buy side, with genuine ownership of an allocation. Family office, endowment, sovereign fund, multi-family office or institutional multi-asset. - Demonstrable manager selection across private equity and hedge funds. You have run the due diligence, monitored the positions through a cycle, and made the decision to exit at least once. - Experience negotiating with managers, not only allocating to them. - Comfort with listed and systematic strategies, and enough technical literacy to judge a backtest and hold a quantitative developer to account. You do not need to write the code yourself. - Hong Kong based. Fluent English; Mandarin or Cantonese useful. Familiarity with the Hong Kong family office regime is an advantage. - Absolute discretion. This is a private family's balance sheet, not an institution's. THE ARRANGEMENT Part-time to begin with, around three days a week, moving toward full-time as the office builds. We would rather set that out honestly than describe the scope as smaller than it is. Work from home, with working sessions at the principal's Hong Kong office. Compensation commensurate with experience, with performance participation negotiable. Direct access to the principal, and no committee between you and a decision.
