AbbVie's PDS&T organization is seeking a highly motivated, talented Principal Engineer I, Process Development with a proven track record and expertise in developing small molecule drug products for our site based in North Chicago, IL. This individual will serve as a technical expert by leading studies aimed at delivering robust pipeline assets and commercial products. The candidate is also expected to foster productive collaboration and demonstrate effective communication within scientific teams. Responsibilities Lead project cross functional teams to deliver robust process for late-stage small molecule solid dosage assets and commercial products by solving complex engineering challenges Collaborate within functions to integrate scientific objectives into activities associated with development of new/improved products or technology. Function as a technical expert by anticipating, recognizing, and resolving problems. Demonstrate understanding of the issues relevant to the broad organization and business. Conceptualize and implement novel approaches using combinations of engineering scientific principles. Design and coordinate experiments to test hypothesis related to project outcomes; extract the full relevance of scientific observations while assuring experimental quality through sound experimental design and provides advice on experimental design. Champion new technologies and demonstrate applicability departments/business units. Implement new technical alternatives for research from literature review, industry knowledge, and extensive development experience. Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related field with 14+ (Bachelors), 12+ (Masters), or 6+ (PhD) years of related work experience with strong engineering background. Deep technical background in pharmaceutical development. Solid oral dosage process development experience is highly preferred. Must be very experienced in the lab as well as in the production environment. Demonstration of creative 'out of the box' thinking to solve complex technical problems and champion new technologies to achieve project goals. Interacts well with diverse groups within function and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
