Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of heavy and special motor equipment; and does related work as required. Examines and locates mechanical defects in a variety of heavy and special motor equipment such as power shovels, cranes, wrecker trucks, heavy tractor-trailers, catchbasin cleaning machines, motor graders, and other earth moving equipment. Disassembles, repairs, grinds or replaces work parts; fits new parts and adjusts engines, oil, water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering gear; replaces electrical wiring, overhauls hydraulic lifts and steering assemblies on motor graders and tractors; uses welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen various parts and pieces of equipment; maintains records of time and materials used on each job. 2 years of experience required in related work. Must have own tools. Ability to meet MA Emission Testing Certification may be required. OEM or ASE cerification may be required. EVT certification Level 1 may be required. Ability to become certified in federally mandated refrigerant recyling and service procedures. Pre-employment physical and drug test required. CDL class B with airbrake endorsement may be required. Must be a resident of the city of Boston.
