Employees in this job perform a variety of activities designed to service, repair and maintain pieces of County owned heavy equipment. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in heavy equipment maintenance. • Performs maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment including but not limited to heavy-duty truck and semi-tractors, loaders, material spreader, excavators, skidders, 25 ton and smaller bulldozers, graders, tractors and trailers, backhoes, and electronic message boards and signs • Operates precinct vehicles and equipment for road testing as needed • Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and 13 speed manual transmissions, high voltage generators, propane powered equipment, and pneumatic systems • Performs flat repairs, mounting, balancing, and tire rotations • Rebuilds various component parts • Inspect equipment, analyze trouble and plan sequence of repair operations • Performs routine maintenance checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment • Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment • Prepares work orders and cost materials estimates • Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety • Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition • Regular attendance and timeliness is required LIMITATIONS AND DISCLAIMER: The above job description is meant to describe the general nature and level of work being performed; it is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required for the position. EDUCATION: Required •High School Diploma or GED Preferred • Graduation from a trade / mechanical school SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE: Required • 3 years’ experience in automotive diagnostics, repairs and services. • A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) is required within six (6) months of hire • Evidence of automotive /ASE Certification a plus. • Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools. • Skill in the use of mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists. • Skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment. • Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions. • Ability to read manuals and schematics (both electrical and hydraulic). All Employees o Must be committed to achieving excellence in assigned duties, always in service of the county and community o Must have ability to earn and keep the trust of fellow employees and the community at large o Must be approachable and ready to help fellow employees and the general public ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Daily exposure to various automotive chemicals, vehicle fuels, lubricants and automotive equipment. Significant job hazards involved with working around construction equipment and on county roads used by the traveling public. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes/odors, dirt/dust, wetness and humidity. Communicates with employees and elected officials. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbent drives on surface streets and operates equipment on unpaved surfaces to diagnose mechanical problems; works around machinery and equipment; and risks exposure to traffic hazards, electrical currents, adverse weather conditions, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dusts, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration. PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: • Reading, speaking, lifting, bending, standing, walking, sitting, while repairing equipment, automobiles, and diesel trucks. • Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment. • Communicating by radio and telephone. • Other physical efforts as required. HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The position schedule is 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday.
