THE ROLE: Under general supervision, performs advanced lifeguarding duties at a City aquatic facility. Provides aquatic safety services, responds to emergencies, enforces facility policies, and serves as a lead resource to lifeguards during assigned shifts. Incumbents are experienced working lifeguards who demonstrates strong safety awareness, sound judgment, and leadership through example. This position does not include formal supervisory or administrative responsibilities. Additional job functions may vary due to department or City needs/requirements. Assignments may include but are not limited to: Maintain constant and vigilant surveillance of pool areas, decks, and surrounding facility spaces. Identify potential hazards and take preventative action to ensure patron safety. Enforce facility rules, policies, and safety regulations in a professional and consistent manner. Respond to water and land emergencies, including performing rescues, first aid, CPR, AED use, and other emergency procedures as required. Complete incident and accident reports accurately and in a timely manner. Serve as a senior-level resource for lifeguards during assigned shifts. Provide guidance and clarification on safety procedures and emergency response protocols. Assist in maintaining proper lifeguard rotation and coverage under direction of supervisory staff. Model professional behavior, uniform standards, and effective patron interaction. Offer constructive feedback to peers regarding safety practices and performance. Assist with opening and closing procedures, including equipment setup and storage. Monitor pool conditions including water clarity and deck safety; report concerns to supervisory staff. Ensure rescue equipment is present, accessible, and in proper working condition. Support special events, swim meets, lessons, and rentals as assigned. Communicate clearly and courteously with patrons regarding facility rules and aquatic safety. Provide information regarding programs and services as needed. Address minor patron concerns and elevate complex issues to supervisory staff. The Senior Lifeguard is distinguished from Lifeguard by demonstrated experience, strong emergency response skills, and the ability to serve as a lead working lifeguard. This classification does not include hiring, scheduling, disciplinary action, or administrative oversight responsibilities. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years old. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or certification from a nationally recognized organization. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a lifeguard or performing lifeguard duties required. Prior experience assisting with lifeguard rotations, emergency response, peer guidance, or aquatic facility operations is preferred SAFETY / WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an indoor and/or outdoor aquatic environment with exposure to water, humidity, chemicals, and varying temperatures. Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, swimming, and the ability to perform strenuous rescues and lift up to 50 pounds in emergency situations. Evening, weekend, and holiday work is required.
