Writes non-emergency police reports on behalf of local law enforcement agencies, which involves producing reports, interviewing citizens, and related duties. This description was prepared to indicate the kinds of activities and levels of work difficulty required of positions in this class. It is not intended as a complete list of specific duties and responsibilities. Processes online reports based on established policies and procedures. Ensures non-emergency nature of reports: non-violent and not currently occurring. Gathers sensitive or complex information – some of which may be disturbing - through interviews with callers, and accurately documents the information received in the law enforcement records system. May be required to testify in court regarding information obtained through interviews and reports. Guides customers in using online reporting; reviews and processes online reports, including follow-up calls as needed. Assists individuals who require interpreters. Answers general inquiries about incident reporting. Organizes and maintains accurate records and required documentation. Maintains strict discretion with confidential and sensitive information. Fully trained employees will assist in training other staff members. Performs related work as required. Combinations of education and experience that are equivalent to the following minimum qualifications are acceptable. Open-Entry Requirements: Education: Graduation from high school, vocational school, or equivalent. Experience: Six months of customer service experience where a significant portion of the work included using a computer to enter and retrieve data. Skill: Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute (150 keystrokes). Licenses and Certifications: Must obtain ACCESS II (A Central Computerized Enforcement Service System) certification within the probationary period. Pre-employment Requirements: All applicants are subject to a thorough police background investigation, including but not limited to criminal history, fingerprinting, and polygraph. To facilitate the background investigation, applicants must submit a Personal History Statement (PHS) form. Completion of this form is MANDATORY for employment consideration. Applicants must first meet the minimum qualifications to be invited to take the examination. Those who pass the examination will then go on the hiring list. The examination will be conducted in the form of a multiple-choice test and skills simulation. The skills simulation portion, an assessment that replicates real job tasks in a virtual environment, will evaluate your abilities essential to the position. Possible subjects covered in the examination: Computer Skills Proofreading Keyboarding Reading & Writing Interpersonal Skills Attention to Detail This is an online examination that will require a computer. If you do not have access to a computer, please notify Civil Service so that one may be provided. Computer reservations can also be made through your local public library. Examination links with instructions will be emailed . Once you receive the link, the testing window is Thursday, 12:00 AM to the following Monday at 11:59 PM. Additional examinations shall be administered as applications are received with results merged into one eligible list according to final ratings, pursuant to the Merit System Rules of the Civil Service Commission: Rule IV, Section 13 – Continuous Examinations. Upon request, at time of application, City of Spokane will provide alternative accessible tests to individuals with disabilities that impair manual, sensory, or speaking skills needed to take the test, unless the test is intended to measure those skills.
