JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Water Services Foreman or other employee designated to supervise, the Utility Maintenance Technician will perform physically demanding, skilled manual work. This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to respond to emergencies as needed throughout the Department of Public Works. UTILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I $24.11 - $26.52/hr ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Cleans gutters, culverts, and other drainage structures, wastewater and storm water collection system lines and facilities. Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt and timber. Cuts brush and weeds; spreads sand and salt on slick and hazardous roads. Performs road maintenance, e.g., setting forms and inlets, curbs and gutters, and surfaces with asphalt mix. Mixes concrete and mortar. Enters and works in confined spaces. Digs ditches and performs back-fill work. Operates air tools or light equipment. Turns water services for the public on/off and helps install services. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with City officials, co-workers, vendors and the general public as well as employees of utilities and other agencies whose business is related to operation, construction and maintenance. Operates equipment including, but not limited to, pickup trucks, air compressors, power mowers, power saws and jack hammers. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES: Vehicle Operator’s license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City’s insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment. Maryland State Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire. The employee must maintain the certification for the duration of their employment. REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.): Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. General knowledge and ability to use computers. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Experience with buried pipe and basic plumbing skills. Experience with heavy equipment. UTILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II $25.91 - $28.51/hr ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all duties of the Tech I Utility Maintenance position. Operates equipment including, but not limited to, dump trucks, and tapping machines. Performs routine and preventative maintenance tasks on equipment and machinery. Maintains records and logs of work performed. Maintains daily inspection logs on equipment and vehicles operated. Performs manual work and other duties required in DPW operations, such as answering phones and/or communicating information to vendors, other departments, and the general public. Meets with contractors and homeowners to review locate requests/service calls and handle complaints. Performs other duties as assigned.
