The Department of Parks and Recreation has 8 aquatic facilities to include: 2 indoor pools, 4 community pools and 2 waterparks. The aquatics department serves over 400,000 visitors a year. We offer a number of aquatic programming options, with nearly 7,000 participants per year. The swim lesson aide assists in providing swim lesson instructions to participants in the pool, helps with set-up and clean-up of the program area, takes attendance, provides excellent customer service, and ensures the safety and security of the swim lesson participants. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must be 15 years old or older Have knowledge of all six (6) swim strokes and be able to jump into chest deep water Must be able to tread water for one (1) minute and then swim 25 yards of either freestyle or elementary backstroke Starting Rate of Pay: $13.75 The Department of Parks and Recreation conducts DMV records checks on all licensed employees and criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older. Note: The information that follows is a County-wide Classification Specification that may include details not specifically applicable to this position NATURE OF WORK This class is part of the Recreation Job Family. Incumbents monitor areas, participants, and events to ensure the safety of all visitors and participants. Responsibilities include: monitoring games, practices, and events to ensure compliance with code of conduct; assisting patrons as needed; and performing reception and concession duties. Distinguishing Characteristics This position is responsible for monitoring games, events, and practices; ensuring compliance with applicable code of conduct rules; providing customer services; and performing reception and/or concession duties. TYPICAL CLASS RESPONSIBILITIES (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.) 1. Monitors games, practices, and events to ensure compliance with code of conduct and other regulations. 2. Performs reception and concession duties during sporting events. 3. Provides customer assistance by directing customers to requested services. 4. Compiles and maintains a variety of logs, records, and reports related to daily activities including activity reports and work orders. 5. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. KNOWLEDGE Basic mathematical concepts; Customer service principles; Recordkeeping principles; Cash handling procedures; Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations; Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment; Modern office technology; Computers and related software applications. SKILL S Providing customer service; Maintaining basic operational records and reports; Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards; Utilizing computers and relevant software applications; Using a computer and related software applications; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Discipline specific responsibilities do not apply to this classification. LEVEL OF DECISIONS Responsibilities are typically procedure based with defined goals and processes or methods, but incumbents have the latitude to determine the speed or order of steps used to complete assignments. DIRECTION RECEIVED Incumbents perform tasks following defined procedures and standards, and deviation from procedures typically requires prior approval. DIRECTION PROVIDED Incumbents are typically not responsible for providing formal work direction. MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 8th grade education and 0-12 months of related experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Minimum 15 years old; First Aid Certification and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification may be required depending on position; Federal or State background check may be required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
