Join the City of Wichita Engineering Division as a Civil Engineer and lead projects that improve the streets, sidewalks, and transportation infrastructure relied upon by thousands of residents every day. In this role, you will manage pavement preservation and reconstruction projects from planning through construction, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest engineering standards. You will oversee project inspectors, collaborate with contractors and the Street Maintenance Division, evaluate innovative pavement preservation techniques, and provide technical expertise that extends the life of the City's infrastructure. This position also plays a key role in managing the Material Review Board and Approved Materials List, helping determine the materials used on City construction projects. Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm Bargaining Unit: Employee Council Anticipated starting salary: $ 61,184 - $84,984 (based on experience and qualifications) Posting may close at any time Supervises employees inspecting pavement preservation projects. Compiles preliminary project cost estimates and monitors project budgets through completion of construction. Determines project specifications and is responsible for updating the same, primarily through development of detailed Special Provisions for each project. Conducts pre-bid and pre-construction conferences. Conducts MRB meetings and helps determine approval/denial status for all new materials for inclusion on the Approved Materials List. Evaluates existing pavement to determine condition and remaining service life, and evaluates pavement preservation methods for future use. Completes basic design work for any changes required by projects. Determines construction schedules, traffic configurations, and limits of work. Conducts site reviews of the progress of construction projects. Approves contractor partial payments, change orders, and final payments for projects. Resolves problems with contractors, citizens, and inspectors. Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed. Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional civil engineering Considerable knowledge of modern methods and techniques of design, construction, and maintenance of public street projects Skill in making engineering computations, estimates, designs, and in preparing plans and specifications and technical reports Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret building plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with construction sites Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees, representatives of other organizations, and the public Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. Required Experience and Training Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university. Ability to register as a Professional Engineer in State of Kansas within two (2) years of employment. A valid driver's license. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Preferred Experience and Training Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university. A valid Professional Engineer (PE) license. Two (2) years of experience managing pavement preservation, pavement reconstruction, street, sidewalk, trail, or transportation infrastructure projects. Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
