Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition. Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulatons. Keep track of event times, elapsed time during game segments, and starting or stopping play when necessary. Qualifications: Officials must have a thorough knowledge of the rules of the sport and be able to enforce them during play. This can involve studying the sports rule book, as well as attending classes or seminars. Some sports organizations review and update their rules annually, so continuous study is often necessary.
