WHO WE ARE: The Town of Harrisburg is one of the fastest growing communities in North Carolina and considered one of the top ten affluent zip codes in the surrounding region. While growth has been exponential over the past ten years, the Town has been able to maintain its tight knit community-based mindset and strategically foster a work culture where customer service excellence is our #1 priority. WHAT WE NEED: The Town of Harrisburg is accepting applications in the Engineering Department for the position of Civil Engineer. An employee in this class performs professional engineering work within the Engineering Division of the Engineering and Public Works Department. Work includes development review, civil engineering design support, capital project support, stormwater program assistance, technical field review, consultant coordination, construction support, and preparation or review of engineering documents under the direction of the Deputy Town Engineer. The position reports to the Deputy Town Engineer. The Civil Engineer provides technical engineering support and may exercise responsible charge for assigned engineering work consistent with licensure and Town direction. The position coordinates closely with the Project Manager, construction inspection staff, Public Works Division staff, Planning, developers, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and other Town departments. Work requires strong technical judgment, project coordination, customer service, and the ability to organize multiple simultaneous assignments. Work is evaluated through conferences, review of records and work products, quality of technical recommendations, regulatory compliance, project delivery support, and effectiveness of relationships with internal and external customers. DESIREABLE CANDIDATE: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field and considerable related engineering, development review, construction administration, or project management experience, preferably in a municipal or utilities setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional Engineer license in North Carolina, or Professional Engineer license in another state with ability to obtain North Carolina licensure within six months of employment, is preferred or required as determined by the Town based on assignment. Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. WHAT WE OFFER: An excellent comprehensive benefits package and a desirable place to work where employees feel appreciated for their contributions. The hiring range is $73,282 - $91,155 annually and starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and prior experience. Eligible for $2,500 sign-on bonus upon hire. Please submit resume, employment application, references and salary requirements to either resumes@harrisburgnc.gov or at https://www.harrisburgnc.org/jobs.aspx .

That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.

Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.

Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.

When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
