Senior Backend Software Engineer About The Team Authenticity Guarantee is an important initiative at eBay where a select category of items are authenticated by professional authenticators to increase buyer confidence and satisfaction. The Authentication Technology team is responsible for building software for orchestrating the authentication process and storing high-value items. The team is also responsible for building software for warehouse operations, including integration with custom hardware, RFID readers, and Android-based mobile devices. About The Role We are seeking a talented and motivated Senior Backend Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain the core services that power our authentication platform. In this role, you will lead the architecture of distributed systems, ensure high availability and performance, and drive operational excellence through cloud-native best practices. You will work closely with product managers, cross-functional engineering teams, and DevOps to deliver robust, scalable solutions on Google Cloud Platform. Responsibilities System Design & Architecture: Define, design, and implement complex, multi-tier distributed software systems. Participate/lead architectural discussions and produce high-quality design documentation. Backend Development: Develop and maintain scalable, high-performance services using Java/Spring Boot. Create and evolve robust RESTful and GraphQL APIs for internal and external integrations. Cloud & DevOps: Lead the deployment of services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Cloud Build) and embrace Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles. Operational Excellence: Improve system reliability, observability, and performance. Troubleshoot production issues and participate in incident management. Leadership: Mentor junior team members, conduct rigorous code reviews, and drive engineering standards across the team. Required Qualifications Experience: 6+ years of advanced software development experience (or 5+ with a Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience) in building large-scale distributed systems. Core Backend Expertise: Deep expertise in Java/J2EE and Spring Boot. Solid understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and caching mechanisms. API Proficiency: Extensive hands-on experience designing and developing APIs using REST and GraphQL. Cloud & Data: Proven experience working in a distributed cloud-native environment (GCP preferred). Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL database design, data modeling, and performance tuning. Engineering Practices: Proficient in professional software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing (unit/integration), source control (Git/GitHub), and code quality standards. Nice To Have Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes/GKE). Familiarity with event-driven architectures and distributed processing. Experience with infrastructure automation and monitoring tools (Cloud Monitoring, Logging, Terraform). Understanding of warehouse operations, logistics, or high-value item authentication. Basic familiarity with front-end technologies (React) if needed for cross-team collaboration. Additional Details The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below: C$118,000 - C$157,500 Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including RRSP eligibility, various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
