Summary We are looking for a mid-level SQL Server Database professional to manage, optimize, and support our Microsoft SQL Server databases. This is a hands-on hybrid role: you will personally write, test, and deploy new T-SQL — stored procedures, functions, and views — based on business requirements, in addition to administering, tuning, and supporting the database in a production environment. Candidates should expect a roughly even split between hands-on development work and administration/performance/HA-DR responsibilities. This role does not hand off T-SQL development to a separate team — you own it end to end, from writing the code to deploying and supporting it in production. Key Responsibilities Database Design & Development Personally write, test, and deploy new T-SQL — stored procedures, functions, views, and complex queries — based on business and application requirements. This is not a diagnose-and-recommend function; you implement the changes yourself. Design and maintain SQL Server databases, tables, indexes, and other objects. Review and optimize existing T-SQL code for performance and maintainability. Collaborate with developers to ensure efficient schema design and data access patterns. Administration & Maintenance Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server instances. Manage database security, users, roles, and permissions following least-privilege principles. Implement, monitor, and test backup and recovery strategies. Perform regular database maintenance (index maintenance, statistics updates, integrity checks). Performance & Troubleshooting Monitor database performance and resolve bottlenecks related to queries, indexes, blocking, and resource usage. Analyze execution plans and make recommendations for tuning — and implement the resulting query/index/procedure changes directly. Troubleshoot database-related incidents and provide root cause analysis. High Availability, DR & Security Assist in implementing and supporting HA/DR solutions (e.g., Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Clustering). Help ensure databases meet security, compliance, and audit requirements. Participate in planning and testing of disaster recovery scenarios. Monitoring, Support & Documentation Use monitoring tools to proactively identify and address issues. Provide production support, including participation in an on-call rotation as needed. Create and maintain documentation for configurations, processes, and standards. Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Work with cross-functional teams (Developers, DevOps, Infrastructure, BI) to support projects and deployments. Contribute to automation efforts (scripts, PowerShell, deployment processes) to reduce manual work. Help define and enforce database best practices and coding standards. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience. Approximately 3–5 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server in a production environment, including direct, recent experience writing and deploying T-SQL stored procedures, functions, and views , index optimization — not solely diagnosing or recommending changes for others to implement. Strong skills in writing and optimizing T-SQL (stored procedures, functions, views, complex queries), database design/indexing/normalization, and backup/restore & core HA/DR concepts. Experience with SQL Server tools (SSMS, Extended Events/Profiler, Performance Monitor, etc.). Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve database performance and availability issues. Experience with cloud database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instance, AWS RDS for SQL Server). Exposure to SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS. Scripting/automation experience (e.g., PowerShell, Python, or similar). Familiarity with version control and database deployment via CI/CD pipelines. Microsoft SQL Server or Azure database-related certifications are a plus.
