About Understand Tech At Understand Tech, we build purpose-built AI applications that solve real business problems. Sovereign by design, our solutions run directly inside our clients' environments — from their private cloud to fully air-gapped infrastructure — giving them complete control over their data. Our conviction: AI should never come at the expense of security or confidentiality. We work with large enterprises and demanding organizations that can't afford to compromise on either. As we grow, we're looking for a versatile developer who is equally at home writing application code and getting complex deployments to run flawlessly in the field. The Person We're Looking For You're a crack developer and a genuine DevOps lover — as happy shipping a clean React component as you are debugging a Terraform plan or hardening a deployment. You bring patience and a lot of passion to your work, you thrive as part of a team, and you're driven by the challenge of delivering AI that runs securely and reliably at scale for large customers. Your Responsibilities You'll join our team to work on AI-in-a-Box , our AI solution designed to be installed and operated directly within our clients' infrastructure. In this role, you will: Contribute to the development of our applications, from the backend (Python / FastAPI, Firebase, MongoDB) to the frontend (React); Design and industrialize on-premise deployments at client sites — containerization, infrastructure as code with Terraform, automation, and constrained or air-gapped environments running on Linux (Ubuntu); Deploy and operate LLM and agentic pipelines in production, ensuring performance, reliability, and security; Build and maintain the infrastructure layer of the solution: authentication, networking, logging, and monitoring; Manage the solution lifecycle over time, including the quarterly release of AI-in-a-Box updates at client sites; Remotely administer and maintain deployed instances to ensure their reliability and continuity of service; Contribute to the architecture and evolution of the platform, in direct connection with client needs; Integrate AI tools into the development cycle (Claude Code) while ensuring the quality and reliability of the code produced; Take part in code reviews and the continuous improvement of our engineering practices. Your Profile 1 to 3 years of experience in full stack development; Fluent English is required, French is a plus. Proficiency in Python (ideally FastAPI) and React; Experience with Firebase and MongoDB; Solid DevOps skills: Docker, Terraform, CI/CD, and AWS cloud environments; Comfortable working in Linux (Ubuntu) environments; Hands-on experience deploying LLM and agentic pipelines — a strong plus; Familiarity with data and AI security requirements: you understand what's at stake when handling sensitive data; Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code or equivalent); Critical thinking: you know how to assess, question, and validate AI-generated code rather than accepting it as is; A team player who is patient, passionate, and genuinely enjoys collaborative work; Autonomy: you can take ownership of a topic end to end, with minimal supervision; Technical curiosity and a taste for versatile environments where you get to work on everything. What We Offer A permanent position within a human-sized startup, with a direct impact on the product; A competitive salary, with stock options possible; A role at the heart of a forward-looking field: sovereign, secure AI deployed in real-world conditions at client sites; A modern technical environment and strong exposure to the entire value chain, from development to deployment; Our office in Frontignan, on the Mediterranean coast near Montpellier — on-site, close to the sea and the sun. Practical Details Contract type: Permanent, full-time Location: Frontignan, Hérault, France (near Montpellier) — on-site presence required Compensation: Competitive salary + stock options possible Start date: As soon as possible To apply, send your resume along with links to your work (GitHub, portfolio, projects) to contact@understand.tech

That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.

Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.

Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.

When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
