Position Description CGI Federal is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to architect, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and enterprise data models. In this role, you will support the design and implementation of data solutions using medallion architecture principles, ensuring structured, high quality data across bronze, silver, and gold layers. You will work in a fast paced, agile environment that values innovation, collaboration, and the use of emerging technologies to advance our clients' data capabilities. This position is located in Arlington, VA. Your future duties and responsibilities Pipeline Development: Design, build, and maintain scalable, production grade data pipelines using modern frameworks and cloud based processing technologies, aligned with medallion/lakehouse architecture best practices. Data Modeling: Architect, implement, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models, ensuring clear relationships and optimized structures across bronze, silver, and gold data layers. Data Transformation: Develop robust transformation workflows that produce curated, high quality datasets and a well structured semantic layer supporting analytics, data science, and operational use cases. Optimization: Continuously optimize and tune data workflows for performance, cost efficiency, reliability, and scalability across distributed data processing environments. Data Quality & Governance: Implement and enforce data quality checks, validation rules, metadata standards, and lineage tracking to ensure accuracy and integrity throughout the data lifecycle. Reporting Support: Assist in enabling data visualizations and BI reporting by ensuring curated data is readily accessible to downstream analytics tools. Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholders, including data scientists and business analysts, to define data requirements and deliver scalable, well documented solutions. Required qualifications to be successful in this role: Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. 4 8 years of experience in data engineering, ETL/ELT development, and production pipeline support. Technical Skills: Strong expertise in designing and building scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and data integration solutions. Proficiency in SQL and Python for data processing, transformation, and automation. Experience with distributed processing engines and scalable compute frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark). Hands on experience with modern enterprise data platforms such as Databricks or Azure Synapse. Deep proficiency in data modeling, schema design, and implementing medallion/lakehouse architectures. Experience with cloud native data services and storage technologies across major cloud platforms. Familiarity with orchestration tools and CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments. Soft Skills: Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to articulate technical concepts to varied audiences. Ability to lead design discussions, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architectural decision making. Desired qualifications/non essential skills required: Knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI). Strong problem solving and debugging skills. Experience with workflow orchestration tools or job scheduling frameworks. Understanding of data governance concepts, including metadata management, lineage, access control, and data stewardship. Exposure to CI/CD practices, version control workflows, and automated testing in a data engineering context. Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.

When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
