The Data/Migration Engineer is responsible for executing and supporting all data migration, cleansing, profiling, and transformation activities required to modernize systems and move data between environments (production → lower environments, legacy → modern VA platforms such as BIP/AWS VAEC) for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Product Delivery Services (PDS), Benefits and Memorials (BAM), Memorial and Benefit Services (MBS) deliver secure, reliable, and effective Information Technology (IT) solutions that support the Department’s mission. Ensures data quality, prepares test data, manages database refresh operations, and supports BI, FinOps, and data governance initiatives. Execute data profiling, cleansing, and migration strategies, including creation of test data. Support development and implementation of data migration strategies, plans, requirements, and testing across environments. Maintain repeatable processes and scripts to mask/sanitize data when databases are refreshed from production. Detect and resolve data quality issues, performing analysis on causes, impacts, and remediation. Maintain Architecture Document Artifacts and participate in peer reviews. Support creation and maintenance of Data Models, Data Dictionaries, Data Catalogs, and migration documentation Manage DDL/DML updates, database refreshes, and masking/sanitization processes. Required Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or IT with 10+ years' experience Experience in data migration, data cleansing, profile analysis, ETL/ELT processing, and transformation. Experience executing DDL/DML updates, performing database refreshes, and implementing data masking/sanitization processes. Experience supporting cloud migration efforts (AWS, VAEC) and legacy data modernization. Experience providing BI support, FinOps data analysis, and quality monitoring activities. Experience developing test data, managing database performance, and supporting migration tools Knowledge of database migration tools (Liquibase, Flyway, DMS, GoldenGate, etc.) and cloud data services Strong understanding of masking/sanitization techniques and compliance requirements for handling VA data Public Trust Preferred Use of Oracle; DMS, GoldenGate, AWS Glue, Pentaho; legacy modernization Integral partners with federal defense, intelligence, and civilian leaders to tackle their most important challenges and deliver positive outcomes. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
