JOB SUMMARY The Staff Engineer is a full-stack developer and technical leader proficient at designing and developing all layers of complex software applications. This engineer works on an agile product development team as a hands-on contributor, collaborator, and leader. The Staff Engineer plays an important role on their team by leading significant initiatives, establishing team best practices, and helping teammates grow as engineers. This role partners with product management, architecture, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to design, build, and support scalable, secure, and reliable systems supporting critical healthcare business functions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Software Development Design and implement high-quality software features and components for complex software solutions, including the responsible use of agentic coding tools to enhance productivity, maintainability, and software quality. Select appropriate design patterns and follow industry best practices to create maintainable, long-lived code optimized for long-term quality. Work with the product team to develop software that meets requirements while remaining maintainable and performant. Lead sizing and complexity evaluation discussions for initiatives. Troubleshoot complex software, application, and performance issues through analysis, testing, benchmarking, and root-cause investigation. Facilitate effective team collaboration, guiding and mentoring peers in engineering best practices including automated testing, code reviews, documentation, and secure coding standards. Testing & Quality Assurance Define test practices covering all layers of the application. Define and implement QA processes such as code review and static analysis. Create testing strategies covering unit, system, and end-to-end tests as well as security, performance, regression, and automation testing. Coach teams on testing techniques such as test-driven development (TDD), behavior-driven development (BDD), and testing for positive and negative scenarios. Data Management Devise data storage and access strategies that meet the needs of high complexity features. Use knowledge of data modeling, data storage, and data transmission techniques to make appropriate design decisions. Design and implement scalable data ingestion and processing solutions supporting analytical and operational workloads. Design metadata to make applications more scalable and adaptable. Apply data modeling, schema design, query optimization, and database performance tuning techniques for relational database systems. Design solutions that address data quality, idempotency, late-arriving data, scalability, and maintainability requirements. Infrastructure & Integrations Advise on and pilot specialized cloud services for analytics, AI/ML, etc. Design and support cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS technologies including MWAA (Apache Airflow), Glue, Lambda, SQS, S3, EKS (Kubernetes), Aurora PostgreSQL, and Redshift. Expert-level management of relational and non-relational database servers. Manage infrastructure using infrastructure as code (IaC), including Terraform. Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Concourse, or similar technologies. Establish advanced monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions for infrastructure. Design systems for high availability, load balancing, and disaster recovery. Operations Support production systems through deployment activities, monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, and operational improvements. Improve operations culture of team by defining best practices, metric radiation, and identification of operational patterns. Collaborate with partner teams to improve platform stability, performance, and scalability. Utilize techniques like blue/green deployments to minimize user impact. Understands business impact of operational product issues in production. Participate in on-call support processes as needed. Security & Compliance Lead team in development of software with a security-first mindset using knowledge of standard security protocols and common security risks, secure coding techniques, and appropriate usage and protection of sensitive information including PHI. Proactively design secure code, employing best practices and threat modeling. Implement secure integration methods and data-transfer protocols including TLS, SFTP, PGP, and equivalent technologies. Complete regulatory compliance documentation and design security safeguards. Requirements & Design Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to design appropriate systems based on business needs and technical constraints. Write detailed technical stories and technical epics. Define and manage tech debt. Coordinate technical epics and non-functional requirements. Employ industry-recognized architectural patterns to create large-scale, highly reliable system designs. Translate business needs into practical technical solutions that balance functionality, maintainability, scalability, and delivery timelines. Team Leadership & Collaboration Assist with planning, estimating, and coordinating delivery of work across multiple concurrent initiatives. Provide technical mentorship and constructive feedback to engineers on the team. Support adoption of engineering standards and development, testing, and documentation practices. . Build strong working relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Continuously expand knowledge of relevant technologies, tools, industry trends, and healthcare-related systems. KNOWLEDGE & REQUIREMENTS Highly motivated, self-learner, and technically inquisitive High level of experience with Python, and strong experience with at least one other programming language, with preference given to TypeScript and/or Java Experience with cloud computing platforms and infrastructure as code. This role includes heavy use of MWAA (Apache Airflow), Glue, Lambda, SQS, S3, EKS (Kubernetes). High level of experience with SQL RDBMSes, including database design, data modeling, and query optimization and troubleshooting. PostgreSQL preferred. Experience with non-relational databases, and messaging systems Experience with standard service and software deployment patterns, as well as use of CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions or Concourse High level of experience developing, deploying, and supporting REST services and microservices Provides a positive impact at a company-wide level: influences cross-team initiatives, mentors teammates, drives innovation, guides projects with unclear outcomes, appropriately balances team autonomy with organizational guidance Excellent track record of collaborating with stakeholders. Experience proposing new product offerings. Actively contributes to company-wide strategies using industry knowledge and foresight Excellent written and verbal communication skills EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Minimum years of work experience: 10+ years Minimum level of education or education/experience: Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, IT
