DESCRIPTION As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain distributed backend services that process high-volume, low-latency messaging traffic to detect and prevent fraud across multiple communication channels, including SMS, RCS, and WhatsApp. You will work on highly scalable systems that rely on event-driven architectures, distributed data processing, and cloud-native technologies. The role requires close collaboration with globally distributed engineering teams to build reliable, high-performance services while sharing technical knowledge and contributing to engineering best practices. RESPONSIBILITIES Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs. Build and evolve distributed systems capable of processing high-volume, time-sensitive workloads. Develop solutions using Java/Rust and work with distributed messaging platforms such as Kafka. Design efficient data solutions using relational and analytical databases (e.g. MySQL, ClickHouse, BigQuery, Athena). Ensure reliability, observability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence across services. Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers across multiple regions. Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering best practices. Continuously improve performance, scalability, security, and maintainability of our platform. Participate in knowledge sharing across our global anti-fraud organization. REQUIREMENTS Professional experience in backend software development. Bachelor's degree in a related field. Professional working proficiency in English (Advanced or Fluent). Strong experience developing applications in Java and/or Rust. Experience designing and operating distributed systems. Solid understanding of event-driven architectures and messaging systems (Kafka or similar technologies). Experience working with relational and analytical databases. Experience building applications deployed on cloud platforms (i.e. AWS). Experience with containerized environments (Docker and Kubernetes). Experience implementing observability solutions, including logging, metrics, and monitoring. Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing, code quality, performance, and security. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Be based in Brazil; NICE TO HAVE Experience with Rust is a plus. We don't expect everyone to know Rust from day one, but we do expect curiosity and willingness to learn. Our team will provide the support needed during your onboarding and learning journey. Experience in fraud detection, cybersecurity, telecommunications, or messaging platforms. Experience processing large-scale streaming data. Experience with Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines. Experience working in globally distributed engineering teams. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
