Project/Unit Description GTRI/ASL is looking to grow their team who supports sponsored programs with developing and expanding CI/CD pipelines using DevSecOps practices. The team is responsible for maintaining existing resources primarily focusing on application administration but not limited to system administration for new requirements. This team works directly with the sponsor or GTRI project director to understand application security and development needs to expand on existing capabilities as well as supporting an effort to transition to containerized applications. Job Purpose The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams. Key Responsibilities Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation. Design, test, and develop computer software in order to meet program requirements. Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts. Contribute to research reports, presentations, white papers, and competitive proposals. Create and analyze network protocols. Additional Responsibilities Develop infrastructure as code in environments using state of the art DevOps solutions. Research, configure, administer and maintain Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for various programs. Support automation efforts across the development lifecycle and across different research programs. Support AI initiatives in development and product baselines. Develop and maintain DevOps code using ansible, git, AWS, and many other technologies. Design and test user stories and test cases. Act as code reviewer to ensure coding best practices. Work with sponsor organizations to provide CI/CD pipelines to government software development organizations such as Software Factories. Apply specific understanding of DevOps culture and software release processes to configure workflow utilities such as the Atlassian suite to facilitate agile development and appropriate configuration management. Automate build processes, security inspection, and delivery with a goal of accelerating software delivery to quickly address vulnerabilities and maximize sponsor value. Serve as SMEs of specific software delivery utilities for the purpose of mentoring others, establishing capabilities on new programs, and affecting the development culture of an organization. Administer a software artifact repository (Nexus). Serve as a SME for build tools, such as Apache Ant and Maven. Develop and document processes for software library releases and versioning across division projects. Consult with projects to develop Git source code branching and versioning processes. Educate junior and senior software developers in best practices and build tooling. Required Minimum Qualifications Strong experience with Git and a scripting language such as Python or Bash. Strong experience developing CI/CD pipelines utilizing tool such as GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure Pipelines. Moderate experience with containerization using tools such as Docker/Podman. Some experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform. Some experience deploying bare metal or VMWare vSphere ESXi virtual systems that includes hardening the system. Preferred Qualifications Active Secret Clearance. Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible. Experience with a container orchestration platform such as Kubernetes. Experience utilizing Agile software development practices. Completed one of the DoD Approved 8570 Baseline Certifications for IAT Level II status. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
