Fidus is a global high-tech design firm headquartered in Ottawa, with additional design centres in Kitchener-Waterloo and San Jose. We specialize in leading-edge electronic product development, with hardware, embedded software, FPGA/ASIC, and signal integrity teams working together to design and deliver next-generation products for clients in emerging technology markets.Position Overview/Mandate:The PCB Layout Designer is responsible for designing and delivering complex, high-speed, multi-layer PCBs for Fidus clients. You will work closely with hardware, signal integrity, mechanical teams, and manufacturing partners to translate electrical requirements into high-quality, manufacturable PCB layouts. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on dense designs across different technologies and substrates, values attention to detail, and takes pride in producing robust, zero-defect layouts that meet performance, cost, and manufacturing requirements.Make an Impact with US:At Fidus, you'll work on high-speed, high-complexity electronic systems, often using emerging technologies before they reach the broader market. You'll collaborate across FPGA/DSP, hardware, embedded software, verification, SI/PI, PCB layout, and mechanical/thermal design as part of cross-functional teams delivering real products for our clients. In practice, that means contributing to projects in areas such as space and satellite systems, next-generation communications and networking, high-performance compute and storage platforms, advanced video, imaging, VR/AR applications, and industrial, medical, and automotive systems. You won't be limited to a single product or industry?your work will follow the technology, not just one roadmap. What You'll Be Doing:Layout of complex, multi-layer, high speed PCBs using Cadence Allegro PCB Design, Mentor Expedition/PADS or Altium. PCB layout design on different core material substrate, component placement, impedance matching and routing analysis Work closely with the mechanical and the signal integrity team during product development phases Generate fabrication drawings, assembly drawings and drill files Work closely with board houses to ensure compliance with DFA and DFM practices and lead DFM reviews, until closure to ensure the design is ready for high volume manufacturing Interface with board houses to resolve technical issues Research and implement new techniques and technologies to grow the PCB design skill-set, reduce PCB cost, and stay current on industry PCB design practices.Who You are:Minimum 5 years of experience laying out dense, high-speed, digital and analog boards for various industries and products. You must have a proven track record for delivering high-quality designs.Extensive experience applying advanced electrical constraint sets using the Allegro Constraint Manager, or equivalent College technician diploma or equivalent IPC certification will be considered an asset Be detail driven and have a good understanding of how to produce zero-defect layoutsUnderstand the fundamentals of high-speed circuit card design and routingExhibit strong communication skillsInteract well with customers and other employeesRamp-up quickly on new technologies and processesContribute to a dynamic and friendly working environment.Layout of complex, multi-layer, high speed PCBs using Cadence Allegro PCB Design, Mentor Expedition/PADS or Altium. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
